Bourbon hires two officers full time

BOURBON — The Bourbon Police Department is now operating at full force following the hire of two full-time officers March 8. The Town Council approved the hire of Rick Kanarr and Matthew Haskins, both of whom had been members of the reserve force.
The department had been down two positions after the retirement of John West in June of 2010 and the death of Gary Collins in February of this year.

Triton schools in session through May

BOURBON — Students of the Triton Schools will be in classes until the last day of May in order to make up days to equal the 180 state mandated number.
At the school board meeting March 14, the board was given the official notice that in addition to the Feb. 21 day that was already used as a make-up day, classes will now be in session April 22, May 13, May 27 and May 31. The last day for teachers will be June 1.
This school year, there have been three two-hour delays, two two-hour delays that were then converted to closings, and four days closed due to inclement weather.

Trojans trump Rockville in overtime

LAFAYETTE — Triton’s boys basketball team emerged from semistate action bloodied, battered and bruised, but most important, unbowed and unbeaten.
Triton sophomore Clay Yeo, fouled on his way to the basket, sank a pair of tie-breaking free throws with 32.8 seconds left in overtime, and the Class A No. 2 Trojans survived for a 44-42 semistate championship win over Rockville at Lafayette Jefferson’s Crawley Center Saturday.

Department head attendance not mandatory

BOURBON — It was determined at the March meeting of the Bourbon Town Council that town department heads’ attendance to the monthly meetings is not mandatory.
The fact was decided upon after town employees asked for reimbursement for attending the meetings — meetings that they must give a departmental report during. Bourbon Town Council President Les McFarland and member Larry Wattenbarger concluded that they did not feel the employees should be compensated for attending as — as Wattenbarger put it — “it was part of the job.”

New town council member selected

BOURBON — Bourbon resident Philip (P.J.) Hanley will be attending his first meeting as a member of the Bourbon Town Council in April. Hanley was appointed last week to complete the term of the late Gary Collins. The term will end Dec. 1 of this year.
A special caucus on the matter was held by the Marshall County Republican Party at the Bourbon Town Hall Wednesday, March 9 at 5 p.m.

BOURBON — From 1977 Chicago Bulls NBA draft pick Rich Rhodes to University of Michigan MVP Lorea Feldman to beloved Coach Ron Smith, one contributor, one coach and four student athletes were inducted into the new Triton Athletic Hall of Fame at the Inaugural Banquet on February 19.

Lunch service report the meeting focus

BOURBON — The Triton School Board heard a lunch service report from Peggy Patrick during its regular meeting Feb. 14.
Patrick apprised the board members on a number of items that will be altering the food services at the schools within the next few months including equipment concerns, raising meal prices for students, and altering food items.

Party leader caucus to be held to refill seat

BOURBON — A Republican party seat was left open on the Bourbon Town Council as a result of the untimely passing of councilman Gary Collins Feb. 4. His term was to run until Dec. 31, 2011.
As a result, there will be a caucus of the Republican precinct representatives, at 5 p.m. March 9 at the Bourbon Town Hall, 104 E. Park St., Bourbon, to fill the vacancy.

Bourbon loses officer, council member, friend

BOURBON — The Bourbon Police Department, Town of Bourbon and the community lost one of its most memorable leaders and friends Friday morning.
Bourbon Assistant Police Chief and town council member Gary Collins, 49, was found unresponsive at his home at approximately 5 a.m. Friday morning. He was rushed to Kosciusko Community Hospital where he was later pronounced dead from natural causes, of an apparent heart attack.
It was reported that after working a 3 to 11 p.m. shift the evening prior, Collins had returned home and went about his normal routine.
