Lady Pilgrims fall in five versus No. 1-ranked Rochester

April 26, 2013

PLYMOUTH — The Lady Pilgrims knew Thursday’s make-up game with unbeaten Class 2A, No. 1 Rochester was going to be a challenge. The Zebras lived up to their reputation.
Unfortunately for Plymouth, the very issue the Pilgrims have been struggling with lately — namely, falling behind by large deficits in the early innings — is the very strength that has pushed Rochester out to a 10-0 start. The Zebras collected 11 hits over the first three frames, quickly putting the game out of reach en route to a five-inning, 15-2 win at Centennial Park.

Marissa German partnered with Ellen Smith for a 6-2, 6-1 win at 1 doubles as Andria Shook made the move up to 2 singles and Mikayla German moved down to 3 singles, where both suffered straight-set losses, German’s in a closely contested 6-4, 7-6(2) match with Memorial’s Taelor Grose.

Lions down LaVille, 8-1

April 25, 2013

BREMEN — Mickey Mantle once famously quipped that “Hitting the ball was easy. Running around the bases was the tough part.”
Bremen baseball found the opposite to be true in Wednesday’s Northern State Conference game with LaVille. Luckily for the Lions, they’re pretty darned good at running those bases.

Pilgrims win marathon with Wawasee, 7-6

April 25, 2013

PLYMOUTH — A win, is a win, is a win... and Plymouth’s Pilgrims made it three wins in their last four games with an extra inning NLC victory over Wawasee by a final of 7-6 in nine innings Wednesday.
“It was a good win,” said Plymouth coach Ryan Wolfe. “You have some of those games, what it comes down to is that we have seven and they have six, and that’s all that matters. You’d like to get there a different way, but it is what it is.”

Class 3A No. 4 Glenn outlasts Culver in 9

April 25, 2013

WALKERTON — Culver Community battled nine innings with Class 3A, No. 4-ranked John Glenn Wednesday night.
In the end, it was an unearned run that did the Cavs in.
Mark Einhorn reached on an error in the bottom of the ninth, and Culver pitcher Kyle Vlach intentionally walked Justin Gierlowski, bringing up David Jaworski, who took a full count offering from Vlach up the middle to score Einhorn for the 1-0 walk-off win at the Falcons’ home at The Nest in Walkerton.

Rally not enough for Plymouth at Wawasee
Plymouth made the long trip to Wawasee on Wednesday night in a varsity-only Northern Lakes Conference battle.
The Lady Pilgrims plated three runs in the top of the sixth, but it proved too little, too late as the host Warriors handed their guests an 8-3 defeat.
The first inning was defensively focused as each team remained scoreless, but Wawasee broke through in the second when Kylee Rostochank singled to left, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on a deep RBI double from Ashlynn Fisher.

Plymouth ends NLC drought
Plymouth’s boys track team earned a split in a three-way Northern Lakes Conference meet on the Pilgrims’ home track Monday.
The Pilgrims may have fallen to Elkhart Memorial, 86-46, but they beat out NorthWood 71-61 to end a two-year drought in NLC dual meet wins.

Tough loss on the road for Pilgrims

April 23, 2013

PLYMOUTH — It was the best of games, it was the worst of games, and in the end it was a loss for Plymouth’s Pilgrims on the road at Goshen, 6-5.
Getting up early the Pilgrims looked to build even more on the momentum they began to build with two big come-from-behind wins, but couldn’t hold on and suffered a come-from-behind loss.
“You get up four-oh and they got back in it,” said Plymouth coach Ryan Wolfe. “And we didn’t do what we had to do to close it out tonight.”
