Argos falls in five to South Central at Culver championship

June 5, 2014

CULVER — The Argos Dragons came up short in their bid to take home the Sectional 51 Baseball Championship, losing 14-2 to the South Central Satellites in the finals.
South Central put the bat to the ball early and often and it felt like there was just nothing in their power the Dragons could do to stop them.

Lady Lions fall short at regional

June 5, 2014

BREMEN — The Lady Lions reloaded and returned, but they fell just a little short again.
Bremen softball’s state tournament run ended at regional a second straight season as the Lions succumbed to visiting Eastside in a nip-tuck 2-1 outing at Pfeiffer Field in Sunnyside Park Tuesday night.
“They’ve got seven seniors on that team. If you’ve got a senior-lead team — good for them — that’s how you want to go out when you’re a senior,” said Bremen head coach Mike Huppert.

Argos knocks off Cavs at Culver Sectional

June 3, 2014

CULVER — Culver Community rallied, but the runs came too little, too late.
The Cavs plated three runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but it wasn’t enough to undo an 8-1 Argos lead, and the Dragons held on to knock off defending sectional champion Culver, 8-4 on the Cavs’ home field Saturday.
“I think we hit the ball well today. We’ve been playing well the last six or eight games,” said Argos head coach Lowell Hatfield. “We came out and hit the ball, we were aggressive on the bases and did what we had to do to win a baseball game.”

Clay closes out Plymouth, 7-2

June 3, 2014

PLYMOUTH — Key plays in key moments equaled a win for Clay and an early exit from sectional play for Plymouth as the Colonials took a 7-2 win at Bill Nixon Field Saturday afternoon.
Joey Lange was the key at the plate and Santos Kramer on the mound for Clay and execution that had been so instrumental to the Pilgrims heading into the tournament was lacking at key moments. Lange had a pair of homers — a grand slam in the second and a two-run shot in his next at bat — to account for all but one of the Clay runs. K.G. Parkhurst accounted for the other with a solo homer of his own.

Lady Cavs add 4x100 berth to state

May 30, 2014

CULVER — Culver Community had an historic performance at Tuesday’s girls track regional, advancing athletes in four events to the Indiana high school state finals.
Except that now, it’s five.
On Wednesday, the IHSAA invited Culver’s 4 x 100 relay team of Kayla Shaffer, Mickella Hardy, Justine Dexter and Denisha Brown to run at the state finals in Bloomington on Friday, June 6, using a callback provision in the qualifying rules.
In a nutshell ... they are too fast not to be there.

Pilgrims close with loss to Clay

May 30, 2014

MISHAWAKA — Plymouth’s softball season came to a close Wednesday night with a 7-1 loss to Clay at the Class 4A Mishawaka Sectional.
The Lady Pilgrims led Clay through the fourth inning as Hayley Brown had a shutout going, but the Colonials finally got to her in the fifth. Clay racked up five hits in the inning and capitalized on two errors and two wild pitches to take a 7-1 lead, which is all the runs the Colonials would need as they made that score stand up through seven.

Triton repeats at home sectional

May 29, 2014

BOURBON — The sectional pool was different for 2014, but Triton’s softball team left no doubt who the best team is — again.
The 10th-ranked Lady Trojans came into the reshuffled Sectional 52 of Class 1A as the overwhelming favorite and came through in impressive fashion, defeating Hamilton by the score of 10-0 in five innings Tuesday night at Keyser Field to claim its second consecutive sectional championship.
Next up should be a very competitive regional contest on June 3 — most likely against fifth-ranked South Central. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Culver Community takes 5th at Warsaw Track Regional

May 29, 2014

WARSAW — About this time a year ago, Kayla Shaffer wasn’t even thinking about the state track finals.
“I played softball when I was a junior,” says the Culver Community senior. “I didn’t run track; I never really thought about it.”
My, what a difference a year makes. Now, Shaffer isn’t just thinking about next week’s state track meet.
She’s thinking about winning it.
“What have we got to lose? We’ll go all out,” said Shaffer, who led a remarkable Cavalier surge Tuesday at the Warsaw girls track regional.

Lady Trojans move into sectional final

May 28, 2014

BOURBON — The outcome was not surprising, but it was certainly no gimme.
It took near-perfect pitching and timely hitting before Triton could put away Bethany Christian for the second time in five days, this time during the Class 1A Sectional 52 softball semifinal at Keyser Field.
“Sectionals puts a little edge on things, a little tension that you don’t have during a regular game,” said Triton head coach Steve McBride, “but the bottom line is we are tickled to win and we move on to the next game which is what we wanted to do.”

Lady Lions top Prairie Heights

May 28, 2014

TOPEKA — The bywords for Bremen’s softball team have been pitching and defense. Of course, the Lady Lions are looking pretty good at the dish, too.
Bremen’s softball team started off its Sectional 35 title defense on the right foot Monday afternoon. The Lady Lions got solid pitching from their staff of Chelsea Huppert and Shannon Arndt, who were backed up by an errorless defense, and the team racked up 10 hits en route to a convincing 11-3 rout of Prairie Heights at the Westview Sectional.
