Schuman, Lacefield make state cut in shot
A pair of area shot putters made the cut out to next weekend's state finals at the Kokomo Boys Track and Field Regional Thursday night.
John Glenn's Hunter Schuman placed second in the shot with a best put of 52'3 3/4", while Plymouth's Adam Lacefield finished behind him in third with a mark of 51'5" as both made the top three cut out to the 110th Annual IHSAA Boys State Finals at the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex at Indiana University in Bloomington next Friday, May 31.

Berkey homer lifts Westview past LaVille
Jake Berkey’s three-run shot in the bottom of the fifth brought Westview back from a 1-0 deficit, and the Warriors made it stand up in a 3-1 defeat of LaVille in the opener on their home turf at Class 2A Sectional 35 at Topeka Wednesday night.
Ryan Bettcher had a double and an RBI but took the tough loss on the mound for the Lancers, giving up just two hits while striking out 14 for his team.

First innings doom Pilgrims, Eagles

LAKEVILLE — Slow starts led to quick exits for Plymouth and Culver Girls Academy in first-round softball sectional play Tuesday.
The Pilgrims yielded eight runs in the opening frame en route to a 10-0 five-inning loss to host Saint Joseph in a Class 3A Sectional 19 first-round contest at Newton Park.
Meanwhile, the Eagles surrendered a nine spot in the first inning and lost in five to Jimtown in the nightcap, 13-0.

Molden is golden for Lions

TOPEKA — Emily Molden seemed to figure something out at the plate Monday night.
The freshman third baseman doubled three different times in the seventh spot in the Bremen lineup to help power the Lady Lions to a sectional-opening win over Central Noble. She wasn’t quite as hot in Tuesday’s semifinal, but she delivered when it mattered most.

Plymouth, CGA advance
Plymouth and defending regional champion Culver Girls Academy were both victorious in the Culver Tennis Regional semifinal round at Culver Academies Tuesday. CGA beat back Peru 4-1, while No. 1 Singles Allie Berger won in three sets to secure the Pilgrims’ 3-2 victory over Warsaw.
Championship match is set for 5:30 p.m. today.
In the individual singles tournament, Bremen’s Morgan Smith advanced in straight sets, while North Judson’s Jordan Frasure bowed out.

TOPEKA — It’s the old cliche for Bremen softball at the Class 2A Westview Sectional — the Lady Lions are taking it one game at a time.
So far, so good.

Pilgrims win final regular season game over Knox

PLYMOUTH — As a final tuneup for the sectional the pitching couldn’t be much better, but there are some questions remaining for Plymouth at the plate as the Pilgrims pulled out a pitchers duel with Knox at Bill Nixon Field Monday night, 1-0.
A battle between Knox’s Davey Johnston and Plymouth’s Joey Dragani ended with the Knox (6-17) defense flinching in the Plymouth sixth and Dragani dealing a one-hit shut out as his final tuneup headed for sectional time.

Softball
Argos bows out
The Argos softball team bowed out with a 13-2 loss to host South Central in the Sectional 51 opener Monday night in Union Mills.
South Central now advances to face the winner of Monday’s other quarterfinal between Westville and Marquette Catholic tonight with a game between Northern State Conference foes Culver Community and Triton scheduled to follow.
Missy Golden and Charlie Horn each finished with two hits for Argos. Horn tripled and Golden drove in a run. Allison Flower, Raelynn LaFrance and Cylie Hartman all scored runs in the season closer.

TCU Athlete of the Week Michael Hartman

Plymouth's Michael Hartman recorded wins in all four of his events — the 100, 200, open 400 and 1600 relay — to help power Plymouth to its eighth straight sectional championship on the Pilgrims' home track last Thursday.
