Lancers step up again

January 29, 2011

LAKEVILLE — On another night, LaVille head coach Michael Edison might have worried about a letdown.
After all, the Lancers were coming off a big win against Rochester Tuesday, their first in 14 years to be exact. And it was Homecoming week in Lancerland, with all the distractions that entails.

Falcons dominate the paint in win over Knox

January 29, 2011

WALKERTON — Size mattered for John Glenn Friday. And strength. And depth. And quickness. And offensive balance.
The Falcons utilized all five of those qualities to work the ball inside, and finish, in a 67-46 Northern State Conference boys basketball win over visiting Knox at The Aerie.
With Knox standout Josh Risner sidelined for the evening by what Redskins head coach Todd Boldry termed “a violation of team rules,” the Falcons opened the second half with a game-changing 17-1 run to convert a five-point halftime edge into a 44-23 lead with 2:53 left in the third frame.

New Prairie shoots down Bremen in fourth quarter, 67-51

January 29, 2011

NEW CARLISLE — Sometimes a close game can get away in the blink of an eye, like in Friday night’s meeting between Bremen and host New Prairie.
Bremen trailed by six points going into the fourth quarter, but a 19-5 New Prairie run pushed the Cougars to a 67-51 victory.
It was an unfortunate result for Bremen, which played some of its best basketball of the season through three quarters.

Trinity holds Richie to 22 in OD Homecoming spoiler

January 29, 2011

HAMLET — Trinity’s plan was to keep Zach Richie down.
Their plan was more successful than they could have hoped, and Trinity left Oregon-Davis with a win at the Bobcats’ Homecoming, 72-59.
“We knew we had to stop Zach,” Trinity head coach Mark Havard said. “We knew he was their big scorer. We knew he was a tough competitor, but we were up for the challenge. “
Big scorer might be an understatement. As a junior, the Bobcat is only 28 points shy of 1000, and only five points shy of O-D’s record of most points scored in a season. But the Titans were certainly up to the challenge.

Raiders spoil Plymouth Senior Night

January 28, 2011

PLYMOUTH — Plymouth’s defense held Northridge 11 points under its average but continued its rough scoring streak without Marissa Green, and the Class 4A, ninth-ranked Lady Raiders spoiled Senior Night with a 39-25 victory at The Rock Thursday.
“Northridge is a really good team; you’ve got to give them a lot of credit,” said Plymouth head girls basketball coach Dave Cox. “They put a lot of pressure on us offensively, so we had a lot of trouble getting shots off. It’s one of those things, I think, giving them 39 points is OK; we’ve just got to score more than 25.”

Pilgrims compete at boys NLC swim prelims

January 28, 2011

ELKHART — Plymouth’s young squad finished sixth in both the 200 medley and 400 free relay and reached the consolation finals in six individual events against a tough Northern Lakes Conference field at the NLC prelims at Concord Thursday.
With just one senior and five sophomores on the Pilgrims swim team, head coach Leanne Senter knew it would be tough to compete for a share of the NLC crown and was happy just seeing the numerous personal- and season-bests her swimmers clocked.

Lady Cavs secure second straight win vs Bobcats

January 26, 2011

CULVER — In Horse parlance, Culver Community’s girls basketball team proved it.
Just three days after dethroning Oregon-Davis in the Bi-County Tournament final, the Class 2A No. 6 Lady Cavs upended the Lady Cats again, this time more convincingly than Saturday’s four-point margin.
Culver landed a quartet of players in double figures and held Class A, No. 4 OD to 32 percent from the field in a 68-50 win at John R. Nelson Gymnasium Tuesday.
