Eagles in, Pilgrims out at Sectional 19

PLYMOUTH — Culver Military Academy rallied past Mishawaka Marian for a 55-51 reprisal victory, while South Bend St. Joseph’s used suffocating defense to knock out defending champion Plymouth in Class 3A Sectional 19 semifinal action at The Rock Friday.
The Eagles and the Indians will face off in the championship game tonight at 7:30 p.m. EST.

The old adage goes that the best defense is a good offense, but St. Joe showed that sometimes good defense can make for a pretty good offense, too.

Upset puts Bremen in title game; Westview surge knocks out LV

TOPEKA — Bremen point guard Ben Hueni willed his team to victory with 16 second-half points as the Lions beat Fairfield 50-43, while the Class 2A No. 7 host Warriors outscored LaVille 41-24 in the second half of the other semifinal for a 64-51 at Westview Friday night.

Bremen coach Kyle Hanyzewski had a simple message for his team going into Friday night’s sectional match-up with Fairfield — one win, and the Lions would play for a championship.
Bremen will do just that Saturday night.

Triton survives South Central; Westville bounces Dragons

BOURBON — Second-ranked Triton continued its recent dominance of Class A Boys Basketball Sectional 50, although not without a scare.
Meanwhile, a 29-percent mark from the field and 27 points from Westville’s Dan Warnke doomed Argos in a 64-40 loss in the second sectional semifinal Friday at The Trojan Trench.
The host Trojans, 46-39 winners over South Central behind five 3-pointers from senior Griffyn Carpenter, seek their fourth consecutive crown tonight in a championship-round clash with Westville at 7 p.m.

Ancilla's Bunkowfst has hot hand

PLYMOUTH — She wasn’t quite able to push her team to victory, but Ancilla’s Rebecca Bunkowfst capped off her sophomore season on a personal high note Tuesday.
The Lady Chargers sophomore guard knocked down her first seven attempts from deep on her way to a career-high 23 points and the single-game team record for 3-pointers as Ancilla’s season closed with a 63-56 overtime loss at Lake Michigan Community College Tuesday.

John Glenn's Jacy Borlik signs with Bethel

WALKERTON — Even as a freshman, Jacy Borlik dreamed of playing college basketball. After impressive junior and senior seasons, the John Glenn standout will finally get her wish.
Borlik, a 5-foot-8 guard/ forward with the Lady Falcons, has committed to continue her basketball career at Bethel College.

Plymouth starts strong at sectional

PLYMOUTH — Plymouth got off to a red-hot start, and while New Prairie stayed in it for three quarters, things quickly unraveled for the Cougars in the fourth.
The Pilgrims hit their first five shots while holding New Prairie scoreless for the first two and a half minutes to take a 12-0 lead at the 5:24 mark of the first quarter, then went an ultra-efficient 83 percent from the floor in the second half en route to a 56-37 rout of the Cougars in their Sectional 19 quarterfinal Wednesday at The Rock.

The Ancilla College women’s basketball saw their season come to an end in an overtime thriller, falling 63-56 at third-seeded Lake Michigan College in the opening round of the NJCAA District G Women’s Basketball Tournament in Benton Harbor, Mich. on Tuesday.
Rebecca Bunkowfst scored a career-high 23 points for Ancilla (8-17), connecting on her first seven attempts from beyond the arc to set a team record for three-pointers in a game.

Marian ends Glenn’s season

PLYMOUTH — Up against an uptempo Mishawaka Marian squad and struggling to score, John Glenn slowed it down Tuesday.
But the Falcons still couldn’t convert, and the Knights stayed disciplined in the halfcourt, handing Glenn a season-ending 46-34 loss in the Class 3A Sectional 19 opener at Plymouth.
The Falcons scuffled to a 13-for-29 finish from the field, while Marian converted at a 50-percent, 17-for-34 clip for the win.

Bobcats fall to Westville, 70-54

BOURBON — The magic that kept Oregon-Davis nipping at Westville’s heels evaporated in the fourth quarter.
After watching the Bobcats stay consistently within a possession or two during the third frame, Westville shot off 12 unanswered points to open the final stanza and shrugged off OD 70-54 in Class A Boys Basketball Sectional 50 first-round action at The Trojan Trench Tuesday.
Westville moves on to face Argos in the second semifinal Friday. Host Triton takes on South Central — a 59-50 winner over Marquette in Tuesday’s opener — in the first semifinal Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Strong finish pushes LaVille into 2nd round at Westview

TOPEKA — A mix of age and youth helped keep LaVille’s season alive in Tuesday’s opening round of the Class 2A Westview sectional.
Senior Codee Kimbel and sophomore Nick Amor combined for 17 of LaVille’s 19 fourth-quarter points as the Lancers escaped with a 41-37 win over Jimtown.
Amor, who took a shot to the head late, scored 10 points in the final period to help put LaVille (12-9) in Friday’s 7:30 p.m. semifinal against No. 7 Westview (19-2).
