Lindsey, Plothow, Hayden making good on promises

PLYMOUTH — For a third year a group of high school friends will make good on a promise.
Mark Lindsey and Tony Plothow made a promise to good friend Craig Woolfington as he struggled with cancer that his daughter Kate would not have to worry about her college education. The two joined forces with Ted Hayden and for the third straight year the trio will host the Craig Woolfington Memorial Golf Outing to make good on that promise.

Elliott, Kolter tops in boys 14-15 division at Mystic

CULVER — Culver’s Trent Elliott parred number 8 in a playoff at Mystic Hills Golf Club to beat Plymouth’s Nate Kolter after the two tied with 80s in Marshall County Junior Tour action Tuesday in Culver. 
Elliott’s tee shot stopped 4 feet above the hole, and he two-putted the par 3 hole to seal the victory in the boys 14-15 division. Kolter’s drive found a front sand trap causing him to bogey, meanwhile. 
Also at Tuesday’s competition, Plymouth’s John Schenk won the boys 10-11 division, while Ethan St. Michael’s Ethan Oliver won the boys 8-9 competition.

Oregon-Davis names Crown Point’s Crawford as new boys basketball coach

HAMLET — Oregon-Davis High School announced the hiring of Matt Crawford as Physical Education Teacher and Head Boys Basketball Coach of the Bobcats on Tuesday.
Crawford is a graduate of Northridge High School and attended Goshen College where he played basketball for four years. As an assistant at Brownsburg, he was part of a program that won the state championship in the 2007-2008 season. Crawford has been an assistant boys basketball coach at Crown Point the past two seasons.

Glenn's Berkebile is Academic All-State

John Glenn’s Connor Berkebile sinks a putt during the Triton Golf Tournament last year. Berkebile was named to the 2011 Academic All-State team for boys golf after finishing out his senior season at the South Bend Riley Sectional with a solid 79 at Erskine.

PLYMOUTH — John Scott assumed it was just a weather delay.
The Plymouth Post 27 announcer and assistant coach was following the team’s game at Logansport Post 60/418 online last Friday when the feed stopped. But what Scott thought was only bad weather turned out to be something far worse.

Carpenter finishes 24th at state golf finals

FRANKLIN — Time is on Quentyn Carpenter’s side. It just wasn’t Wednesday.
The Triton sophomore’s start was delayed five hours due to weather at the second round of the 75th Annual IHSAA Boys State Golf Finals, and he struggled to follow up his even-par 72 first round with a 7-over 79 at The Legends of Indiana Golf Course to slip from 19th to 24th in Franklin.

Triton sophomore Quentyn Carpenter survived a rough stretch at the end of his round at The Legends to post an even-par 72 and make the cut out to the second day at the 75th Annual IHSAA Boys State Golf Finals in Franklin Tuesday.

CGA’s Neer keeps her cool at sweltering state track finals

BLOOMINGTON — Despite some weighty expectations and the sweltering heat at the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex, Waverly Neer kept her cool Saturday.
Even with temperatures running in the mid-90s, the Culver Girls Academy star managed to break a pair of state records in the 1600- and the 3200-meter runs at the 38th Annual Girls Track and Field State Finals, clocking a 4:43.46 stop in the 1600 meters to shatter the old record by nearly six seconds before setting a new standard in the 3200 in 10:20.66 an hour and a half later.

Bremen hires Ryan Eakins as new b-ball coach

BREMEN — Bremen High School has hired former Mount Vernon Nazarene University JV coach Ryan Eakins as its new head basketball coach.
Eakins was the JV men’s basketball coach at Mount Vernon Nazarene in Mount Vernon, Ohio during the 2010-11 season and is a former assistant coach at his alma mater, Grace College. He is moving to the town of Bremen where he plans to be a substitute teacher in the Bremen Public School System.
Eakins played basketball at Grace College and Seymour High School.

Triton, CMA golf teams heading to Homestead Regional Thursday

FORT WAYNE — A sectional championship is nice, but Triton’s boys golf team has even bigger fish to fry.
The Trojans won their first-ever sectional title by beating out four-peat defending champion Warsaw with a fifth-man score on the Tigers’ home course at Stonehenge Golf Club last Friday. But Triton head coach Jack Carpenter pledged his team wouldn’t be resting on any laurels as the little Class A squad hunts for a second-straight state finals berth at the Homestead Regional Thursday.
