Triton can't dam Hoover, Caston

August 20, 2011

BOURBON — Triton's football team never quite found a way to dam Hoover, or any other Caston player for that matter.
Caston senior running back Trevor Hoover tore up 188 rushing yards on 19 carries and scored three touchdowns to lead the visiting Comets to a 49-28 season-opening win Friday.
All told, Caston, which scored 21 unanswered points to open the game, piled up 378 total yards — 355 on the ground — and sent five different players into the end zone behind a dominating offensive line.

Whichever numbers you measure by, Culver Community came up just short in a 26-21 loss to visiting West Central Friday.

South Central overpowers LaVille, 40-0

August 20, 2011

LAKEVILLE — During a high school football game, when two of the best players on the opposing team have names like Biggs and Sturdy and they are not the 6-foot-4, 310-pound lineman or the 6-1, 220-pound fullback, you could be in trouble.
That is the situation LaVille High School found itself in Friday night as the 12th-ranked Class A and defending sectional-champion South Central Satellites dished out a 40-0 season-opening defeat on the Lancers behind a punishing running game.

Argos tops Plymouth, 3-2

August 19, 2011

PLYMOUTH — At the start of the season, Argos Head Coach Jon Alcorn was concerned about his team’s ability to finish. How does nine goals in two games sound?
Speedy Lady Dragons junior striker Jami Patterson followed up her hat trick Tuesday with a pair of goals and an assist, and Argos handed rival Plymouth a 3-2 defeat at Kindt Soccerplex Thursday.

HAMLET — As students file into Oregon-Davis schools to start the new year they will see a new face in the gym as a teacher and head basketball coach, but he’s hardly a strange face to the area.

If Tuesday’s opener is any indication, question answered.

Plymouth tennis opens strong

August 16, 2011

PLYMOUTH — Last year when Plymouth’s young tennis lineup stepped on the court for their season opener at Kokomo, the Pilgrims showed their inexperience.
It took them awhile to come into their own, but with four players back from that Northern Lakes Conference championship squad, this year’s team showed no such jitters at Monday’s opener at home, and Joe Knapp and Matt Flynn earned a big, three-set victory at 2 doubles to put Plymouth over the top for a 3-2 season-opening win over the Wildkats at Centennial Park.

Area girls soccer teams kick off at Jamboree

August 15, 2011

PLYMOUTH — Area teams shook of some of the rust while giving fans a preview of their 2011 talent at the Plymouth Girls Soccer Jamboree Saturday.
New faces joined some old ones as Plymouth, Argos and Bremen each played each other in three 20-minute IHSAA-sanctioned scrimmages at the Kindt Soccerplex.
One face that is both new and old is Plymouth Head Girls Soccer Coach Chuck DeWitt.
DeWitt takes over as the third girls soccer coach in as many years, but Rockies fans may recognize him as the former head coach of Plymouth’s boys team where he held the reins for 10 years until 2004.
