Rockies drop conference opener to talented Tigers

August 26, 2011

WARSAW —  On the road against defending semistate champion Warsaw, Plymouth was already up against a wall.
When a key player was sidelined with an injury in the second half, things went from bad to worse.
With his team already trailing 2-0, Plymouth defensive player Jordan Popi was forced to leave the game with a broken wrist early in the second half, and the Tigers netted four goals between the 47th and 53rd minutes to put the game out of reach and hand the Rockies an eventual 7-0 Northern Lakes Conference-opening loss at Warsaw Thursday.

Argos wins NISC opener at Trinity

August 26, 2011

MISHAWAKA — The Argos girls soccer team opened Northern Indiana Soccer Conference play with a 3-1 road win at Trinity Thursday.
In a shocking start, Jami Patterson and Sammie Hopkins wall-passed the opening kick-off right down the field with Hopkins striking for a goal with 15 seconds elapsed on the clock. It would be hard to imagine a better start for the Dragons, and the visitors continued their solid play, pressing the Titans for the better part of the opening frame.

Plymouth stressing tradition while Bremen, Glenn look to build in Week 2

August 25, 2011

PLYMOUTH — Following last week’s historic loss to Bremen, the Rockies are taking some history lessons this week.
The defending Class 2A Sectional 26-champion Lions handed Class 4A Plymouth a 21-8 defeat in last Friday’s opener, the first such win for the Lions since 1988, and the experience left a sour taste in the Rockies’ mouths. The team is stressing tradition this Friday as it plays host to another longstanding nonconference rival in Rochester, and the stakes are a fourth-straight Hickory Stick traveling trophy.

Falcons serve up defeat of South Bend Clay

August 25, 2011

WALKERTON — A volleyball team’s first, and sometimes best, weapon is its serve.
That was certainly the case for John Glenn Wednesday as the Lady Falcons handed visiting South Bend Clay a 25-20, 25-10, 22-25, 25-8 defeat.
Led by Anna Schmalzried’s six aces and Stephanie Radandt’s four, Glenn recorded 65-of-78 serving efficiency in the win.
“We’re not very tall, so we have to serve tough and play good defense,” said Glenn head volleyball coach Merly Meares.
