Boys tennis
Plymouth opens NLC 5-0
Plymouth got off to a 5-0 start at the Northern Lakes Conference Tennis Tournament at Concord Wednesday.
Gabe Vervynckt beat Wawasee’s Kyler Love and Lane Singleton beat Wawasee’s Isaac Rigdon 6-0, 6-1 at 1 and 2 singles, respectively, while Luke Bumpus beat Warriors No. 3 Tyler Kissinger 6-1, 6-3.
Jordan Scheetz and Connor Flynn battled back from a first-set loss to Elkhart Memorial’s Jerahmai Dudley and Kyle Grubb to win 4-6, 6-0, 6-1, while Matt Flynn and Joe Knapp beat Wawasee’s Cole Love and Jake Thompson 6-3, 7-5 at 2 doubles.

Trojans talk their way to win at LaVille

LAKEVILLE — Good communication is key in all sports, but perhaps nowhere is it more important than on the volleyball court.
Triton’s players talked each other up Tuesday night, and the Lady Trojans rode that rapport to a three-game Northern State Conference victory on the road at LaVille, 25-20, 26-24, 25-19.

Uceny to hold meet and greet at LifePlex

PLYMOUTH — The best 1,500-meter runner in the world, Morgan Uceny, will hold a meet and greet at Fitness Forum Sports & Wellness Center next week.
Uceny will speak on her recent professional running successes and experiences Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. in The LifePlex Conference Room. She will answer questions and sign autographs for her fans and local supporters.
Uceny crushed the competition in the Diamond League final in Brussels, Belgium, Friday to become the women’s 1,500-meter champion in a time of 4:00.06.

Triton wins NSC round robin
Triton won the Northern State Conference round robin with a 5-0 defeat of visiting John Glenn Tuesday.
The Trojans won in straight sets at all positions to finish the NSC dual meet season undefeated at 6-0. The team travels to the NSC Tournament at Bremen today.

Northridge raids Plymouth Senior Night

PLYMOUTH — With Northridge already up three match points in a high-stakes Northern Lakes Conference meet, it might have been tempting to just give up; it may have been hard to focus on the task at hand.
But with the conference tournament coming up Wednesday and every seed a crucial one, Plymouth No. 2 Lane Singleton bore down to salvage a three-set victory 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-3 for the only win by a Pilgrim upperclassman on a disappointing Senior Night at Centennial Park Monday.

T.J. Carpenter is co-low medalist for Ball State at Falcon Invitational

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Triton High School alumnus T.J. Carpenter earned co-low medalist honors to lead the Ball State’s men’s golf team to a fifth-place finish at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Carpenter recorded a three-round total of 71-67-71=209, and tied with Kevin Penner of UNLV. Ball State managed a 289-286-291=866 to place fifth out of 19 teams. Colorado and UNLV tied for the team title with three round totals of 844, while Colorado State was third with an 857 and North Carolina State was fourth with an 864.

No. 5 Lady Knights hand Argos 3-1 loss

ARGOS — The Argos girls soccer team fell to Class A, No. 5 Mishawaka Marian 3-1 at home Monday night.
The Lady Knights showed the reason for their high ranking, outshooting the hosts 10-3. Maggie Hartnagel gave the visitors a quick start, notching a goal in the sixth minute. Marian’s Gabby Veldman scored twice, once assisted by her sister Denise, to spot the Knights a 3-0 lead with 30 minutes to play in the game.

Lady Falcons beat Bremen
John Glenn beat Bremen in three games 25-23, 25-11, 25-14 at Bremen Monday.
Brooke Baker led the Lady Lions attack with six kills, an ace and three blocks to go with six digs, while Allie Shorter set 12 assists with six digs, and Taylor Lashbrook recorded three kills, five digs and two blocks.
The Lions fall to 3-13 with the loss, while Glenn moves to an even 4-4 on the year.

WINONA LAKE — A 19th hole playoff is nerve-wracking enough, but facing off against one of your own teammates is even worse.
Culver Girls Academy freshman Mackenzie Toth beat out both teammate Samantha Seibel and Plymouth’s Lauren Rearick to earn the last individual berth out of the Warsaw Girls Golf Sectional Saturday.

Boys cross country
Bremen places fourth in Class A New Prairie Invite
Bremen was bolstered by two top 20 performances to finish fourth in the Class A race at the New Prairie Invitational Saturday, while Triton placed eighth in the race, North Judson was 17th, and Culver Community, LaVille and Oregon-Davis also competed in the Class A event.
In the Class AA race, meanwhile, Culver Military Academy finished eighth, while John Glenn was 15th and Plymouth was 22nd.
