June 7, 2013

PLYMOUTH — Keeping a friend’s memory alive is a powerful thing.
Five years ago a pair of friends started making good on a promise to another. Mark Lindsey and Tony Plothow promised their buddy Craig Woolfington — dying of cancer — that they would make certain his daughter Kate had a chance to go to college.

June 7, 2013

WINONA LAKE — However low Triton goes, Warsaw always seems to be a stroke better.

Plymouth’s Mercer, Bales teaming up as All-Star Series kicks off tonight

June 7, 2013

GREENFIELD — Plymouth basketball standout Mack Mercer and his coach have been doing a little carpooling lately.
Mercer was selected in April as one of the six core players on the IndyStar.com’s Junior All-Star team, when PHS head coach Ryan Bales was also selected as one of just three coaches to the team, and the two have been enjoying the off-the-court time they’ve been spending together lately.

Diamond Spyders have big arms to fill as season opens Saturday

June 6, 2013

PLYMOUTH — The coming of the summer means the start of the American Legion baseball season in Plymouth, and Post 27’s Diamond Spyders will have to deal with some key pitching losses but also return some key elements for the coming year.
“I think some of the teams in the area had some success with young teams and we’re hoping for the same,” said Post Manager Will Hostrawser. “When you lose two quality pitchers like Sean Liedtky and James Hackworth, those aren’t necessarily guys you’re going to replace. We will be as successful as our pitching this year.”

Bremen ousted by Adams Central at Whiting Regional

June 3, 2013

WHITING — There’s not much you can do against a team that is hitting over .400 this season.
That’s what would ultimately be the Bremen Lions’ demise, as they came into the Class 2A Whiting Regional riding high after their Westview Sectional triumph with an 8-0 win over Churubusco and an 8-7 win over Westview in the final.
But unfortunately for Bremen, it ran into a finely-tuned hitting machine in Fort Wayne Luers Sectional winner Adams Central, who pounded out 14 hits on its way to an 11-1 six-inning rout of the Lions on Saturday afternoon in the first regional semifinal at Whiting.

Heckaman leads area athletes at girls state track meet

June 3, 2013

BLOOMINGTON — Say this for Leah Heckaman: She’s got a positive attitude.
Even though Heckaman had to face one of the toughest fields in years in the weight events, including a new state record holder in the discus, the Culver Academies junior was all smiles following Saturday’s IHSAA girls state track finals.
“I had a good day,” said Heckaman, who finished fifth in the discus and 10th in the shot put. “I knew what I wanted to do, and even if everything didn’t go perfect, I’m satisfied.”

CGA edges Carmel for state lacrosse title

June 3, 2013

INDIANAPOLIS — Culver Girls Academy lacrosse team captured its sixth state title in 11 years with a 9-8 win over Carmel Saturday.
Erin Thomas scored a goal off a pass from Kelsi Carr with 3:34 left to break an 8-8 tie. The Eagles led at halftime, 5-3, and led 7-4 after a Morgan Osborn goal. But Carmel slowly climbed back and tied the game with under five minutes remaining.
The Eagles were able to win the draw and run the clock down to 39 seconds before turning the ball over, but goalie Clair Fay gathered up the Carmel shot and ran out the clock to preserve the win.
