Pilgrims down CMA on Senior Night

February 19, 2014

PLYMOUTH — After Saturday’s loss to Penn, Plymouth head coach Ryan Bales had a special message for star forward Mack Mercer. The gist of it was: play bigger.
The 6-9 Belmont-bound senior took the message to heart Tuesday, charging out of the gates with nine first-quarter points on his way to a game-high 26 and putting in a stellar defensive performance on Culver Military’s Devonte Campbell on the other end of the floor to lead his team to a 55-50 rebound win over the Eagles on Senior Night at The Rock.

Lady Cats three-peat at Triton Sectional

February 17, 2014

BOURBON — Oregon-Davis girls basketball head coach Terry Minix hesitated to put a label on his team’s defensive scheme Saturday.
“I term it ‘junk defense,’” he eventually said.
Junk, mixed, hybrid, unconventional, whatever you call it, it worked.
On the strength of that defense, the Class A No. 1 Lady Cats sprinted out to an early 22-5 advantage on their way to a 62-40 Class A Sectional 51 title-round win over host Triton at The Trojan Trench.

Pilgrims earn NLC win at Warsaw

February 14, 2014

WARSAW — A big conference rivalry, another big win for the Pilgrims.
A week ago, Plymouth’s boys basketball team was suffering through a six-game skid. With Thursday’s 38-31 Northern Lakes Conference victory on the road in Warsaw, the Pilgrims are suddenly celebrating their second straight win.

Glenn moves to 6-0 in NSC with Jimtown win

February 14, 2014

WALKERTON — Don’t look now, but John Glenn is on the verge of a Northern State Conference boys basketball championship.
The Falcons collected their seventh straight victory Thursday night, outlasting Jimtown, 52-40. They are 9-5 overall and 6-0 in the NSC.
Considering the season began 1-4, how do you explain that, coach Travis Hannah?
“I wish I could,” said Hannah, who watched his team alternate between hot and cold on its home floor at Glenn. “This isn’t a team that’s easy to understand.”

3rd time’s the charm for Bremen vs LaVille

February 12, 2014

ALBION — There’s an old adage among coaches that one of the toughest things to do is to beat a team three times in a single year. Case in point: Bremen versus LaVille.
After two convincing wins by the Lancers in regular-season play, the third time proved the charm for the Lady Lions as they earned a Sectional 35 reprisal over their NSC rivals Tuesday night, 55-36. Bremen thus advances to Westview — which drew the bye at the tournament — in the early semifinal Friday in Albion.

Triton, OD cruise into Sectional 51 semis

February 12, 2014

BOURBON — Oregon-Davis and Triton boiled down basketball to its simplest objective Tuesday — score points and lots of them.
In the Class A Girls Basketball Sectional 51 opener at The Trojan Trench, senior point guard Ashley Campbell paced four Lady Cats in double figures with a game-high 35 points to lead top-ranked OD to a 73-55 victory over South Central.
Meanwhile, host Triton, guided by junior guard Kylie Mason’s game-leading 21 points, landed all nine of its players in the scoring column en route to a 72-28 pounding of LaCrosse in the nightcap.

Tough losses for Glenn, CGA in sectional openers

February 12, 2014

WALKERTON — It was just opening night of the Class 3A girls basketball Sectional 19 tournament at John Glenn High School Tuesday night, but it had the feel of championship night.
South Bend St. Joseph showed why it is the tourney favorite, dispatching Culver Girls Academy in the opener 62-29, but the game of the night was between 15-game winners Glenn and Rochester in the nightcap.
