Lions trump Cavs at Culver Sectional

CULVER — It took giving up a goal to wake the Lions up. Once they did, they took control.
After Kyle Vlach’s solo goal in the 45th minute cut Bremen’s lead to 2-1, the Lions went to work. Josh Brenneman scored on a penalty kick in the 57th minute, then assisted on a Danny Reynoso strike less than a minute later to put Bremen over the top, 4-1 in a semifinal win at the Culver Community Boys Soccer Sectional Wednesday.
Bremen moves on to play Argos, which beat Winamac 10-0 Wednesday, in the championship Saturday at 6 p.m.

CULVER — There are shutouts, and then there are shutouts.
Argos out-possessed Winamac at every turn to hold the Warriors without a single shot on goal while putting up 10 goals from seven different players in a 10-0 rout at the Culver Community Boys Soccer Sectional Wednesday.
The Dragons move on to face Bremen, which topped host Culver 4-1 in Wednesday’s other semifinal, in the sectional championship at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Probst leads Marian in season-ending defeat of LaVille

LAKEVILLE — LaVille boys soccer head coach Kevin Christy needed just two words to sum up his team’s sectional loss Wednesday – backside goals.
Mishawaka Marian senior Sheehan Probst scored three of them – the game-winner in the 74th minute – to eliminate the host Lancers, 3-2, from Class A Sectional 36 competition at Newton Park.
With the victory, the Knights advance to Saturday’s championship tilt against Bethany Christian, itself an 8-2 victor over John Glenn Wednesday.

NorthWood wins, CMA loses at Warsaw semis
NorthWood beat Wawasee 2-0, while Culver Military Academy fell 5-0 to ISCA Class 2A No. 5 host Warsaw in a pair of semifinal shutouts at the Warsaw Boys Soccer Sectional Wednesday.
The championship is slated for 7 p.m. Saturday.
Taylor Wegemiller tallied a quick pair of goals in the 45th and 46th minutes for the Panthers, who out-shot Wawasee 7-4 for the win. Joshua Ailes and Connor Beckwith assisted Wegemiller’s two strikes.

Pilgrims, Eagles advance at CMA Regional

CULVER — Scouting Columbia City, Plymouth knew to expect strong second sets from the Eagles.
Pilgrims No. 3 singles player Luke Bumpus held off his surging opponent during a competitive second set, as did Jordan Scheetz and Connor Flynn at 1 doubles and Matt Flynn and Joe Knapp at 2 doubles, while No. 2 Lane Singleton recovered from a second-set loss for an eventual tiebreaker win, and the Pilgrims grabbed a 4-1 Culver Military Academy Regional semifinal win Tuesday at the Gable Tennis Complex.

ARGOS — Sitting out intermittent stretches of the season with a hamstring injury, it’s taken awhile for Argos freshman Megan Ditmire to get rolling. Once she did, she brought the whole Argos squad with her.

Girls cross country
New Prairie unseats Bremen for NSC CC championship
New Prairie grabbed the top three spots and four of the top five as it unseated Bremen for the Northern State Conference championship at the NSC girls cross country meet Tuesday in New Carlisle. It was New Prairie’s 16th conference title in the last 20 years.
The Lady Cougars finished with a dominant 18 points ahead of Bremen’s 44, while Triton finished with 75 points, Jimtown had 89 points, and Culver Community, Knox and LaVille all raced at the meet.

Houston Hodges leads Wabash defense in homecoming shutout

CRAWFORDSVILLE — Plymouth graduate Houston Hodges was voted the Wabash Player of the Game and the Defensive Player of the Game as Wabash handed visiting Kenyon a 49-0 win on Homecoming Day Saturday.
The freshman had a huge strip on the first Kenyon possession and had an interception return 74 yards for a touchdown only to be called back due to a penalty.
Hodges also recorded three tackles at the game along with older brother Austin Hodges, while fellow Plymouth grad Brock Smith finished the game with five kickoffs for 304 yards.

CMA closes out Rockies, 2-0

WARSAW — Culver Military Academy’s plan was to score early and use some quick attacking to overwhelm the Rockies.
That’s just what the Eagles did as they handed Plymouth a season-ending 2-0 loss in the opener at the Class 2A Warsaw Boys Soccer Sectional Monday.

Indians stop Pilgrims
Plymouth suffered a setback at sectional rival South Bend St. Joseph’s Monday, falling in four games 25-16, 25-16, 24-26, 27-25.
Amber Redinger led the Lady Pilgrims with 15 kills, while Marissa German tallied 13. Mikayla German served up five aces, while Marissa German and Andria Shook each passed out eight digs, and Amber Redinger finished with three solo blocks and five block assists.
The Lady Pilgrims slide to 17-13 with the loss.
