Trojans overcome injury, foul trouble at Knox

February 26, 2011

KNOX — With leading scorer Griffyn Carpenter out and three starters in foul trouble early, Triton got some excellent preparation for the state tournament next week.
The Class A, No. 3 Trojans — already minus their leading scorer after he was injured in a game at Argos Tuesday — overcame a rocky first quarter in which Clay Yeo, Quentyn Carpenter and Austin Davis were each charged with three fouls and the visitors fell behind 16-13 at the quarter break, ultimately escaping Knox with a 52-46 victory in the regular-season finale for both teams Friday at Weinberg Gymnasium.

Lancers clinch first winning season in 18 years

February 26, 2011

LAKEVILLE — LaVille boys basketball head coach Michael Edison’s face lit up at the mention of Codee Kimbel’s Senior Night crunch-time play Friday.
After all, the 6-foot-3 senior forward scored six of the Lancers’ game-ending eight unanswered points, highlighted by a pair of go-ahead free throws following an offensive rebound off a missed LaVille charity shot with 1:39 to play, and the Lancers collected a 45-39 Northern State Conference win over Jimtown at Dale E. Cox Gymnasium.

Culver ends regular season with road win

February 26, 2011

BREMEN — With Indiana’s version of March Madness mere days away, Culver capped the regular season on a high note Friday night.
After a tremendous start, Culver never looked back and topped Bremen, 54-39.
“We got them earlier in the year at the Bi-County Tournament but we knew this was going to be a dogfight, and we had some kids step up for us,” Culver coach Kyle Elliott said. “I’m very proud of the kids’ effort.”
As it has much of the season, Bremen dug itself an early hole, and couldn’t cut its deficit to less than 12 points over the final two quarters.

Mercer leads Pilgrims on Senior Night

February 23, 2011

PLYMOUTH — Plymouth got a big lift from a freshman on Senior Night, and the Pilgrims earned a much-needed win over John Glenn 43-30 at The Rock Tuesday.
Plymouth freshman Mack Mercer scored at will on perfect 8-for-8 finishing from the floor on his way to a game- and season-high 20 points to help his team snap a four-game losing streak and finish the season strong against the Pilgrims’ Sectional 19 opponents.

Lancers, foul trouble limit OD’s Richie in 80-40 LaVille win

February 23, 2011

LAKEVILLE — LaVille’s boys basketball team took care of the outcome with a 23-2 game-opening run against Oregon-Davis Tuesday.
That reduced the rest of the game’s drama to settling state leading scorer Zach Richie’s final point total.
Buoyed by a revolving double team, the Lancers and foul trouble held Richie to 13 points — more than 25 points below his season average — and junior guard Jordyn Williams led four Lancers in double figures with 22 points as LaVille doubled up the Bobcats 80-40 at Dale E. Cox Gymnasium.

Trojans seeking 4th straight title

February 22, 2011

BOURBON — Triton head coach Jason Groves is having mixed feelings about his team's tournament draw.
The Class A, No. 3 Trojans (16-3) drew one of two byes at the six-team Class A Sectional 50 at Triton, and they're scheduled to play the winner of Tuesday's tourney opener between South Central Union Mills (10-8) and Marquette Catholic (4-13) in a semifinal Friday with the winner going on to play the winner of another semifinal between Argos — which drew the other bye at the tourney — and the winner of Tuesday's quarterfinal between Oregon-Davis and Westville.

Lions look at sectional as opportunity

February 22, 2011

BREMEN — Team unity is easy to achieve when times are good. It's the tough times that are challenging.
The Bremen boys basketball team has seen its share of difficulties this season but has maintained a positive attitude and drive.
"Nobody enjoys losing in basketball, because you play it to win," Bremen coach Kyle Hanyzewski said. "It's easy to get along on a winning team, and what separates this group is they stay together and work for each other. A lot of kids would pack up and quit but these kids bring it every single day and that's been a pleasure to see."
