Ancilla softball team receives national recognition

DONALDSON — The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) released its first Division II softball poll of the season and the Lady Chargers of Ancilla College were listed as one of five teams receiving votes after the nation’s top 20.
Ancilla entered Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA) Western Conference action over the weekend with a 10-4 record before dropping its first two conference games.
“It’s an honor to be mentioned and recognized,” commented Ancilla coach Scott Reese. “The important thing is to make sure we are here at the end of the season too.”

Area teams geared up as 2011 softball season gets under way

With a deep returning cast and a team benchmark in its opener against Argos, Culver Community’s softball team is feeling good about the start of the 2011 softball season.
The Lady Cavaliers topped the visiting Dragons 5-3 Tuesday, giving head coach Cristyn Cottone her first win at the helm for Culver.

Plymouth's Redinger, Barron named All-NLC

PLYMOUTH — Plymouth sophomore Amber Redinger and senior Meagan Barron were named All-Northern Lakes Conference selections for the girls basketball season.
Redinger, a 6-foot forward, averaged a team-high 9.81 points per game in her second season with the Lady Pilgrims, while Barron, a four-year team member and second-year All-NLC pick, averaged 8.57 points per game to finish with a career total of 455 while leading the team to a 14-7 finish at point guard this season.

Bremen's Stichter signs with Bethel tennis

BREMEN — Bremen High School senior Kelsey Stichter has signed a national letter of intent to continue her academic and tennis career at Bethel College in the fall of 2011.
Stichter has played varsity doubles at Bremen for two seasons thus far and looks to have a successful senior campaign this spring playing number one doubles for the second year.

PHS boys basketball coach Stuckmeyer resigns

PLYMOUTH — The Plymouth High School Athletic Department has accepted the resignation of Head Basketball Coach Kevin Stuckmeyer.
A search for a new varsity basketball coach will begin immediately.
Stuckmeyer resigns with a three-year head coaching record of 31-38 — including a 7-15 mark for 2010-11 — after serving previously as an assistant coach with the program.
During Stuckmeyer's tenure, the Pilgrims won the Sectional 19 championship in 2010 after falling in the sectional title game to eventual 3A state runner up Rochester in 2009.

Some new faces, some old as baseball season opens

As the 2011 baseball season kicks off this week, Plymouth seniors are looking for a change in attitude.
With a deep cast of six seniors back with the Pilgrims in Damon Howe, Houston Hodges, Kyle Cartwright, Mitch Good, Richie Luva and Phil Iwinski, the team looks to bring some positive energy to the field and the dugout.

Plymouth’s Green giving it another shot at Hope

PLYMOUTH — The first time Marisa Green tore her ACL, she didn’t know if she would play basketball again. The second time it happened, she wasn’t sure she wanted to.
Luckily for Hope College, the 6-foot-1 Plymouth senior changed her mind.
Green has signed on to continue her basketball career with the NCAA Division III Flying Dutchmen based out of Holland, Mich.

Triton’s Yeo among final three IBCA/Pacers-Fever Players of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS — Triton sophomore Clay Yeo, Park Tudor freshman Trevon Bluiett and Washington senior Cody Zeller are the IBCA/Pacers-Fever Players of the Week for the week of March 21-26.
Bluiett and Zeller were named winners after leading their teams to respective Class 2A and Class 3A state championships, while Yeo is a recipient after helping Triton to a Class A runner-up finish. The citation was Zeller’s fourth this season.

Zailey Hess wins age group as Jana’s Gymnastics competes at Indiana USAG state meet

MADISON — Jana’s Gymnastics competed in the Indiana USA Gymnastics State Meet at Madison High School over the weekend and came home with some impressive places. 
Zailey Hess won the All-Around championship in her age group for Jana’s Bronze Team, which earned narrowly missed a team championship by less than half a point to finish runner-up at the meet, while Jana’s Silver Team earned a fifth-place finish in its division.

Eagles come up short against repeat champion Washington

INDIANAPOLIS — Not satisfied with ending a 36-year sectional championship drought, the Eagles kept on rolling to eventual regional and semistate titles.
On Saturday, their historic run came to an end as defending state champion Washington handed Culver Military Academy a 61-46 loss in the Class 3A State Basketball Final at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
