Plymouth implements new ImPACT concussion testing

April 8, 2011

PLYMOUTH — With the flurry of new research coming out over the past two years on the link between concussions and chronic brain damage, Plymouth High School has decided to take action.
Led by Dr. Tony McPherron, the PHS medical staff implemented a new battery of tests this week to better evaluate the extent of a student athlete’s injuries and determine a length of treatment. Called ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing), it is the first computerized concussion evaluation system.

Big 6th lifts Pilgrims past South Central

April 6, 2011

PLYMOUTH — It was opening day at Bill Nixon Field, and the growing pains were evident.
But the Pilgrims overcame a shaky start with 13 hits and a nine-run sixth inning to get the win over visiting Class A, No. 18 South Central, 14-10 Tuesday.
“We didn’t take advantage early in the game; we left some opportunities, but obviously that sixth inning was huge for us,” said Plymouth head baseball coach Tony Plothow. “Everybody came through with some big hits.”

Errors costly as Triton falls to Rochester

April 5, 2011

BOURBON — With a freshman inside the circle, Triton’s veteran squad needed to make plays behind her.
Instead, the Lady Trojans gave up nine errors in the drizzling wet conditions at their home field, and Rochester batters capitalized off 14 hits and nine bases on balls to rout their hosts 21-3 in five innings in the Zebras’ season opener Monday.
“We’ve got a freshman kid pitching and I understand that, so we have to play some defense behind her, and I thought our defense was not very good tonight,” said Triton head softball coach Steve McBride.

Lady Lions fall to Panthers in 8 in chilly home opener

April 1, 2011

BREMEN — The Lady Lions started their home schedule strong but couldn’t hold on as Washington chipped away at a six-run deficit to eventually overcome its host 10-7 in eight cold, windy innings at Bremen Thursday.
“I think we started off good, jumped out quick and early and got off to a fast start, but I think after that we relaxed a little bit,” said Bremen head softball coach Josh Walter. “I don’t know if it’s spring break break coming up or the weather or what it was, thinking about other things. I thought we were in good shape early… and made mistakes at the end.”

Late rally gives Lions opening day win over Fairfield

April 1, 2011

BREMEN — In a tie game in the bottom of the sixth inning in Thursday’s season opener, the Bremen baseball team came through with clutch hitting and base running when it mattered most.
A two-RBI triple by Dillon Mullen, a sacrifice-bunt RBI by Wes Burkholder and an RBI double by Eric Knepper delivered an 8-4 victory over Fairfield.
“It’s great to get out here against a quality team like Fairfield and to come out with a win against them,” Bremen coach Bo Hundt said.
