Trojans focused

March 15, 2011

BOURBON — With just one game separating Triton from a return to the state finals, it’s important for players not to become infected with their own March Madness.
As the No. 2 Trojans (22-3) take on 12th-ranked Rockville (21-6) at the Class A Lafayette Jefferson Semistate this Saturday at 4 p.m. EST, this week’s lessons have been all about focus.

Trojans reclaim regional supremacy

March 14, 2011

BOURBON — Triton standouts Griffyn Carpenter and Clay Yeo looked like a couple of racehorses just itching to charge out of the Class A Triton Regional gate.
However, saddled with two fouls apiece by the 2:52 mark of the first frame, the high-scoring duo sat the rest of the first half while starters Austin Davis, Jordan Everett and Quentyn Carpenter and reserves Blake Lemler and Zak Shively slowed the pace and steadied the reins.

Eagles follow up 1st sectional title with Crown Point Regional crown

March 14, 2011

CROWN POINT — The Eagles followed up their first ever sectional championship with a regional crown, and they did it with a dramatic flourish.
Senior forward Juwan Brescacin’s tip-in at the buzzer bounced high off the rim before dropping back in to seal Culver Military’s 54-52 win over Western in the championship game at the Class 3A Crown Point Regional Saturday.
The Eagles will now travel to Huntington North for their northern semistate against Columbia City — which trumped Harding 55-47 to win the Blackford Regional over the weekend — Saturday at 3:15 p.m. EST.

Bluejays bow out versus Westview at home tourney

March 14, 2011

NORTH JUDSON — Coming back from a double-digit deficit is difficult. Against a team as sound as Westview, it is nearly impossible.
Down 12 to Westview at halftime of Saturday’s Class 2A regional semifinal, North Judson-San Pierre couldn’t catch up. Aggressive in desperation, the host Bluejays racked up 25 fouls and were outscored 24-10 at the foul line in a season-ending 70-57 defeat.

CGA’s Neer sets 5K indoor national record at New Balance Nationals

March 14, 2011

NEW YORK — Waverly Neer had a feeling it might take a record pace to win the women’s 5,000-meter run at the New Balance High School Indoor Track & Field Championships.
She was right.
The Culver Girls Academy’s star senior and 2010 IHSAA state cross country champion set a national high school indoor record of 16:35.15 Friday night at New York City’s famed Armory Center and still had enough gas left in the tank for a PR in the mile race Sunday.

PHS' Davis continues stellar freshman season

March 11, 2011

PLYMOUTH — Plymouth freshman Nicky Davis has already had an outstanding gymnastics season.
Along with a slew of all-around wins throughout the year, the PHS gymnast owns the school record in the vault with a 9.4 at Saturday’s Wawasee Sectional, also good enough for runner-up honors and the highest sectional finish by a Lady Pilgrim since 2007.
And her season isn’t over yet.
Davis scored an all-around tally of 35.30 Saturday, earning her fifth place overall and qualifying her for tonight’s Valparaiso Gymnastics Regional at 7 p.m. EST.

Bluejays looking to make a run

March 10, 2011

NORTH JUDSON — Three down, four to go.
With sectionals out of the way, North Judson-San Pierre basketball coach Ryan Bales said if you’re not already thinking about a state championship, you’re just not trying very hard.

Best may be yet to come for CMA

March 9, 2011

CULVER — Winning championships is often a matter of peaking at the right time.
Culver Military Academy extended its win streak to eight games with its Sectional 19 championship victory over St. Joseph’s Saturday, and while the Eagles have played some solid basketball and even shown occasional spurts of brilliance in that stretch, head coach Mark Galloway believes he still hasn’t seen his team’s best game yet.

Triton hosts tough regional Saturday

March 8, 2011

BOURBON — Triton faces a historically tough field as the regional round of the 101st Annual IHSAA Boys State Basketball Tournament convenes this weekend.
The Trojans (20-3) take on Pioneer (15-9) in the afternoon game following the tournament opener between Morgan Township (19-4) and Fort Wayne Canterbury (17-4) with the championship slated for 7:30 p.m. EST.
If recent history is any indicator, the ultimate prize could be even bigger than a regional title. The past four champions eventually went on to the Class A state finals, where three of the four claimed state supremacy.

CMA tops St. Joe for Plymouth Sectional championship

March 7, 2011

PLYMOUTH — Two weeks ago Culver Community made program history with its first-ever regional girls basketball championship.
On Saturday, neighboring Culver Military Academies bucked its own historical trend, capturing its first sectional championship since joining the IHSAA state series 36 years ago, with a 66-57 victory over South Bend St. Joseph’s in the Class 3A Sectional 19 final at Plymouth.
