Trojans relying on veteran seniors at state finals

March 24, 2011

BOURBON — When the 101st IHSAA State Basketball Finals convene at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis this weekend, only two of the eight teams will be making their first appearance.
Among the remaining six, half have made the trip more than once in the past decade. Triton will take the floor for a remarkable third time in just four years as the veteran Trojans (23-3) tip off against first-timer Indianapolis Metropolitan (21-6) in the Class A final at 10:30 a.m.

Eagles gelling on state run

March 22, 2011

CULVER — Culver Military players huddled around their coach Monday at Fleet Gymnasium, going over the lessons of the day.
They concluded their practice, as they always do, with their team motto: “Together we work! Together we work! Together we win!”
It’s that togetherness, that team chemistry, players and coaches say, that is responsible for the Eagles’ impressive run to state this season.
CMA (19-6) will play No. 1-ranked and reigning 3A state champion Washington (23-4) at the Class 3A finals at Conseco Fieldhouse Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. EST.

Trojans trump Rockville at 1A semistate

March 21, 2011

LAFAYETTE — Triton’s boys basketball team emerged from semistate action bloodied, battered and bruised, but most important, unbowed and unbeaten.
Triton sophomore Clay Yeo, fouled on his way to the basket, sank a pair of tie-breaking free throws with 32.8 seconds left in overtime, and the Class A No. 2 Trojans survived for a 44-42 semistate championship win over Rockville at Lafayette Jefferson’s Crawley Center Saturday.

CMA beats Columbia City at 3A semistate

March 21, 2011

HUNTINGTON — It took the Eagles 37 years to win a sectional championship. Now they’re going to the state finals.
Culver Military Academy’s Juwan Brescacin slammed home a two-handed dunk in transition with 2.8 seconds remaining, putting the exclamation point on the win as CMA claimed a 51-49 victory over Columbia City at the Class 3A Huntington North Semistate Saturday.

Bremen's Jon Hueni up to the challenge at IU

March 19, 2011

BLOOMINGTON — Former Bremen swimmer Jon Hueni’s experience at Indiana University has proven to be more difficult than his high school exploits, but that was to be expected.
Competing at a Big Ten school, which currently has six teams in the nation’s Top-25 according to Collegeswimming.com, definitely presents its fair share of difficult challenges.
Competition for available roster spots on the No. 14-ranked Hoosiers swimming and diving squad is fierce and does not come without sacrifice, both in and out of the pool.

Culver, Glenn compete at CMA 3-way

March 17, 2011

CULVER — With the outdoor track season roughly a week away, John Glenn and Culver Community athletes got some experience under their belts at an indoor triangular meet at Culver Academies Wednesday.
While the meet may have featured some irregular distances and no team scores were kept, it afforded the Falcons and Cavaliers — whose teams don’t have the numbers to compete in some of the bigger meets of the indoor season — a chance to get out early and flex some competitive muscle.

CMA preps for Eagles vs. Eagles matchup at semistate

March 16, 2011

CULVER — Columbia City may not look like the biggest, most athletic team on the block, but Culver Military coach Mark Galloway knows appearances can be deceiving.
As a former Carmel coach, the first-year CMA skipper has squared off against Columbia City coach Chris Benedict before during summer league play, and he knows Benedict’s team will be ready as the two teams battle in an Eagles vs. Eagles match-up at the Class 3A at Huntington North basketball semistate at 3:15 p.m. Saturday.

Trojans focused

March 15, 2011

BOURBON — With just one game separating Triton from a return to the state finals, it’s important for players not to become infected with their own March Madness.
As the No. 2 Trojans (22-3) take on 12th-ranked Rockville (21-6) at the Class A Lafayette Jefferson Semistate this Saturday at 4 p.m. EST, this week’s lessons have been all about focus.

Trojans reclaim regional supremacy

March 14, 2011

BOURBON — Triton standouts Griffyn Carpenter and Clay Yeo looked like a couple of racehorses just itching to charge out of the Class A Triton Regional gate.
However, saddled with two fouls apiece by the 2:52 mark of the first frame, the high-scoring duo sat the rest of the first half while starters Austin Davis, Jordan Everett and Quentyn Carpenter and reserves Blake Lemler and Zak Shively slowed the pace and steadied the reins.

Eagles follow up 1st sectional title with Crown Point Regional crown

March 14, 2011

CROWN POINT — The Eagles followed up their first ever sectional championship with a regional crown, and they did it with a dramatic flourish.
Senior forward Juwan Brescacin’s tip-in at the buzzer bounced high off the rim before dropping back in to seal Culver Military’s 54-52 win over Western in the championship game at the Class 3A Crown Point Regional Saturday.
The Eagles will now travel to Huntington North for their northern semistate against Columbia City — which trumped Harding 55-47 to win the Blackford Regional over the weekend — Saturday at 3:15 p.m. EST.
