Eagles come up short against repeat champion Washington

March 28, 2011

INDIANAPOLIS — Not satisfied with ending a 36-year sectional championship drought, the Eagles kept on rolling to eventual regional and semistate titles.
On Saturday, their historic run came to an end as defending state champion Washington handed Culver Military Academy a 61-46 loss in the Class 3A State Basketball Final at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

Athletic Pumas trip up Trojans, 59-55

March 28, 2011

INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis Metropolitan’s boys basketball team answered every Triton challenge.
From the No. 2 Trojans’ 12-3 game-opening run right through to Triton senior Griffyn Carpenter’s triple with 5 seconds left, the unranked Pumas responded with defense, big buckets, key offensive rebounds and clutch free throws to down Triton, 59-55 in the Class A state final at Conseco Fieldhouse Saturday.

Triton’s Jordan Everett follows in brother’s footsteps with Trester Award

March 28, 2011

INDIANAPOLIS — While the Triton Trojans came up short in their goal of a second state title and Marshall County teams went 0 for 2 at the IHSAA State Basketball Championships, senior guard Jordan Everett earned himself a nice consolation prize with the 2011 Class A Arthur L. Trester Mental Attitude Award Saturday at Conseco Fieldhouse.
“It’s a very prestigious award, and it’s an honor,” said Everett, who is ranked third in his class and plans to study engineering at the University of Louisville next fall.

Rockie Youth Football League to kick off this fall

March 26, 2011

PLYMOUTH – Youth football players in Plymouth will have a new league to hone their skills this fall.
The Rockie Youth Football League will begin play this coming season. The league will be run in conjunction with the Plymouth High School football program and will play on Saturdays in the fall. The idea is to operate the league as a “feeder” program for the team.
“The focus is going to be on fundamentals,” said Plymouth head football coach John Barron. “We have some very basic things that we think it’s very important for kids to learn and we want to be there to help out.”

March 26, 2011

MARION — Indiana Wesleyan University women’s basketball senior forward Elaine Hessel has been honored as a NAIA Division II All-American Second Team selection.
Hessel is a two-time All-American as she was a First Team member in 2009-10.
The 2007 Plymouth grad averaged a team-leading 14.3 points per game while also pulling down 4.1 rebounds for IWU. She finished second in NAIA Division II with a 60.3 shooting percentage and was 13th in free throw shooting at 84.7 percent from the free throw line.

The Trojan Way: Community rallies around Triton basketball

March 25, 2011

BOURBON — Much was made of “The Trojan Way” at Triton’s boys basketball pep rally Thursday.
True, you can’t talk about the boys basketball program’s recent success — the Trojans will make their third appearance at state in four years at Saturday’s Class A final at Conseco Fieldhouse — without mentioning in the same breath the culture of hard work and high expectations that sixth-year head coach Jason Groves has put in place.

Trojans relying on veteran seniors at state finals

March 24, 2011

BOURBON — When the 101st IHSAA State Basketball Finals convene at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis this weekend, only two of the eight teams will be making their first appearance.
Among the remaining six, half have made the trip more than once in the past decade. Triton will take the floor for a remarkable third time in just four years as the veteran Trojans (23-3) tip off against first-timer Indianapolis Metropolitan (21-6) in the Class A final at 10:30 a.m.

Eagles gelling on state run

March 22, 2011

CULVER — Culver Military players huddled around their coach Monday at Fleet Gymnasium, going over the lessons of the day.
They concluded their practice, as they always do, with their team motto: “Together we work! Together we work! Together we win!”
It’s that togetherness, that team chemistry, players and coaches say, that is responsible for the Eagles’ impressive run to state this season.
CMA (19-6) will play No. 1-ranked and reigning 3A state champion Washington (23-4) at the Class 3A finals at Conseco Fieldhouse Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. EST.

Trojans trump Rockville at 1A semistate

March 21, 2011

LAFAYETTE — Triton’s boys basketball team emerged from semistate action bloodied, battered and bruised, but most important, unbowed and unbeaten.
Triton sophomore Clay Yeo, fouled on his way to the basket, sank a pair of tie-breaking free throws with 32.8 seconds left in overtime, and the Class A No. 2 Trojans survived for a 44-42 semistate championship win over Rockville at Lafayette Jefferson’s Crawley Center Saturday.
