June 9, 2011

BLOOMINGTON — Despite some weighty expectations and the sweltering heat at the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex, Waverly Neer kept her cool Saturday.
Even with temperatures running in the mid-90s, the Culver Girls Academy star managed to break a pair of state records in the 1600- and the 3200-meter runs at the 38th Annual Girls Track and Field State Finals, clocking a 4:43.46 stop in the 1600 meters to shatter the old record by nearly six seconds before setting a new standard in the 3200 in 10:20.66 an hour and a half later.

Triton, CMA golf teams heading to Homestead Regional Thursday

June 8, 2011

FORT WAYNE — A sectional championship is nice, but Triton’s boys golf team has even bigger fish to fry.
The Trojans won their first-ever sectional title by beating out four-peat defending champion Warsaw with a fifth-man score on the Tigers’ home course at Stonehenge Golf Club last Friday. But Triton head coach Jack Carpenter pledged his team wouldn’t be resting on any laurels as the little Class A squad hunts for a second-straight state finals berth at the Homestead Regional Thursday.

CGA's Neer breaks 2 records at state track meet

June 6, 2011

BLOOMINGTON — There aren’t many records left for Waverly Neer to break.
Even on a historic day that featured a total of six record-breaking performances, the Culver Academies senior managed to stand out, knocking off not one but two state standards on her way to championships in both the 1600 meters and the 3200 meters at the 38th Annual IHSAA Girls Track and Field State Finals at Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex in Bloomington.

Cavs’ run ends with loss to Eastside

June 6, 2011

ELKHART — Culver Community earned its first sectional title in 26 years by battling from behind. On Saturday, the Cavaliers simply dug themselves too big a hole to climb out of.
Eastside plated six runs batting through the order during a big third inning, and although Culver scored three runs in the fifth and sixth, it was too little, too late as the Cavs suffered a season-ending 7-3 loss at the Class 2A Jimtown Baseball Regional in Elkhart.
Eastside went on to fall in 10-2 in the championship to Hanover Central at the tourney, while Culver closed out a banner year at 13-14.

Rochester rallies past Plymouth

May 31, 2011

PLYMOUTH — They say hitting is contagious, but once the Rochester bats caught fire Monday, it was downright virulent.
Rochester cranked out nine hits for eight runs in the fifth and sixth innings, tying up the Pilgrims at 6-all on a Chad Miller grand slam during a five-run fifth, then taking the lead for the first and last time with a three-run sixth as they ousted host Plymouth 9-8 in a Class 3A Sectional 19 semifinal at Bill Nixon Field.
The Zebras ultimately dropped the final 8-0 against Marian, which advanced through John Glenn in the other semifinal Monday morning.

Krugh and Marian shut out John Glenn 4-0 in Plymouth semi

May 31, 2011

PLYMOUTH — Mishawaka Marian opened and closed the door on John Glenn all in one inning.
The Knights got off to a bumpy start as two errors and a base hit loaded the bags with no outs in the top of the first, but Marian ace Taylor Krugh came right back at Glenn batters for three straight strikeouts to wiggle off the hook, and the Falcons barely threatened again in a 4-0 Marian win at the Class 3A Plymouth Baseball Sectional at Bill Nixon Field Monday.

Triton falls in championship heartbreaker with South Central

May 28, 2011

BOURBON — There’s a saying in baseball and softball that the third out is often the hardest to get.
Three nights after battling with nine two-out runs to upset No. 5 Westville in their Class A Softball Sectional 51 opener Tuesday, the Lady Trojans experienced the flip side of that fact.
