PLYMOUTH — After losing a pair of players to injuries at St. Joe, a rough second half Tuesday translated into a slow start in Plymouth’s regular season-closer Thursday.

Bremen clinches share of Northern State Conference
Bremen got off to a fast start with 20 points in the first quarter, and the Lady Lions clinched a share of the Northern State Conference crown with a 59-25 win at Jimtown Thursday.
Jenna Pfeiffer scored 24 points to lead all scorers, her third straight game with 20-plus points, including 35 in a win at Wawasee Tuesday. Kailee Feldman finished with 15 in the regular season-closer.
Jimtown was led by Ally Vicsik’s nine points.

Ancilla athletes’ academic numbers up from 2010

PLYMOUTH — Ancilla College student-athletes continued to do well in the classroom as the college reported some hefty increases in grade point averages for fall athletes over last year’s fall numbers.
The Ancilla Athletic Department reported that 52 of its student-athletes finished the fall 2011 semester with a 3.0 grade point average or better, an increase of 11 students over the same period last year. Twenty-one of these students had a 3.5. GPA and many of those were on the dean’s list. Overall, the fall athlete GPA came in at 2.771 compared to a 2.608 GPA in the fall of 2010.

O-D to induct six into Athletic Hall of Fame Saturday

HAMLET — Oregon-Davis High School will induct six new members into its Athletic Hall of Fame Saturday.
The new members of the Hall of Fame will be formally announced between the O-D-Westville junior varsity and varsity boys games.
This year, besides two members of Oregon-Davis graduating classes, the school will also be honoring four members of graduating classes of the two schools that preceded Oregon-Davis — Grovertown and Hamlet High Schools — before the school system was consolidated.
New inductees for Oregon-Davis are Tara Kensinger and Ralph Pearish.

Argos’ VanDerWeele is Ball State Alumnus Soccer Coach of the Year

ARGOS — Argos boys soccer coach Todd VanDerWeele has been named the 2011-12 Ball State University Alumnus Soccer Coach of the Year the college announced Wednesday.
A 1995 graduate of Ball State, Vanderweele led the Dragons to sectional and regional titles — ending 10-year championship dry spells — with a 13-7 win-loss record this season.
VanDerWeele was selected by a vote of other Ball State alumni head soccer coaches at Indiana high schools.

Ancilla soccer coach moving on

DONALDSON — Ancilla College Athletic Director Gene Reese recently announced the resignation of Charger Soccer coach James Drzewiecki, effective Wednesday, due to his acceptance of the head coaching job for the newly formed Purdue University Calumet soccer program in Hammond.

CMA closes team season at Jimtown Regional
The Eagles managed just three wins, and Culver Military Academy fell out of contention for a team regional championship in the first round of the Jimtown Wrestling Regional Wednesday.
CMA lost 58-17 to East Noble, which went on to fall to meet champion Penn in a competitive final, 38-30.
Anthony McHugh pinned his opponent in just 18 seconds at 132 pounds, while Edmond Hogan claimed a dominant 18-1 tech fall over his opponent at 152 pounds, and Pascal Brun won by forfeit at 145 pounds.

CMA clinches perfect dual season

BREMEN — When Culver Military Academy’s weary swim team clinched just the second unbeaten dual meet season in program history, the Eagles didn’t celebrate or cheer.
Worn out from a grueling week stretch in which they’ve swum three meets, CMA’s swimmers simply gave a subdued thank you to Bremen for hosting and thanks to both the Lions and Plymouth for the good competition after topping the three-way field with 140 points ahead of Bremen’s 102 and the Pilgrims’ 79 in the Eagles’ regular-season closer at Bremen Tuesday.

Girls teams gearing up for swim tourney Thursday

While the boys closed out their regular season at the Bremen three-way meet Tuesday, girls area swim teams were gearing up for Thursday’s sectional prelims and the start of the IHSAA’s 38th annual state tournament.
Plymouth and Culver Girls Academy travel to the Warsaw Sectional Thursday with the finals set for Saturday, while Bremen travels to the Penn tournament Thursday with both preliminary rounds set for 5:30 p.m., and the finals at both tourneys slated for 9 a.m. Saturday.
