Rick Hite is Bass Master’s Angler of Year

PLYMOUTH — The Plymouth-based MARCO Bass Masters recently recognized the accomplishments of the 2011 members at the annual awards banquet held at the Brass Rail Bar and Grill.
Plymouth resident Rick Hite claimed his third straight Angler of the Year award after dominating the 2011 season by accumulating 55.61 points with three victories, two seconds and three thirds in eight events.
Shawn Mark of Bourbon was the runner up with 42.71 points. He had two wins and a second place. Brian McNeal of Fort Wayne had 40.86 points to finish third with one win, a second and a third.

Freshmen Trojans win NSC tourney

The Triton freshman boys basketball team won the Northern State Conference Tournament Feb. 4, beating New Prairie, Bremen and Jimtown at the tourney.

Lady Cats back on top at sectional

HAMLET — It was a rematch that Oregon-Davis had been thinking about a long time.
Triton unseated the four-peat sectional champion Lady Cats at last year’s Sectional 51 championship game, and Saturday, No. 4 OD repaid the favor, rallying past the No. 7 Lady Trojans for a 53-47 championship win to dethrone Triton and retake the crown on the Cats’ home floor at The Den.

Bremen’s Abraham Hall won the heavyweight championship in double overtime, and Culver Academies’ Kayla Miracle became the first female wrestler to earn an IHSAA state berth with a fourth-place finish at the Merrillville Wrestling Semistate Saturday.

Alex Starr reaches 1,000-point mark in PUC win

HAMMOND — Plymouth alum Alex Starr became the 15th member of Purdue University Calumet’s 1,000-point club on Saturday afternoon, but her biggest highlight of the day came with 37 seconds left as her three-pointer helped lift the Peregrines to a 77-73 victory over Trinity International.
Starr led all scorers with 23 points, needing less than two minutes to become the fifth player during the Tom Megyesi era to score 1,000 career points with the first of her five three-pointers on the day.

Lincoln wrestlers win Indian Springs invite

COLUMBIA CITY — The Lincoln Junior High wrestling team went 5-0 to win the Indian Springs Invitational Saturday.
After a slow start against Adam’s Central (66-34), the boys improved drastically in the next three rounds by beating Lakeland 103-6, Garret 90-18, and East Noble 102-10. They closed out the day on a high note, defeating a tough Indian Springs squad 68-48.
In a day where the young Rockies were shorthanded due to illness and injury it was a total team effort that got the victory.

Plymouth alum Bayley named HCAC All-Academic

FRANKLIN — Allison Bayley, a 2010 graduate of Plymouth High School and former member of the PHS girls golf team, was named to the 2011 Tom Bohlsen Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference All-Academic team as a golfer at Franklin College.
The Franklin Grizzlies Women’s Golf Team won the 2011 HCAC Golf Championship to earn an automatic qualification for the 13th annual NCAA Division III National Championship which will be played in Angola in May.
