Lady Chargers volleyball signs Castle’s Mieka Wagner

NEWBURGH — The Ancilla College volleyball team has improved its upcoming recruiting class with the addition of Mieka Wagner from Castle High School. The dynamic volleyball player will join the Chargers as a defensive specialist and an outside hitter starting in the 2012-13 season.
“Coach Pickerell and I noticed Mieka within minutes of arriving at the Team Indiana Showcase in early December,” said Ancilla coach Lana Singleton. “This kid is a sparkplug. She jumps well, hustles and has a great, bubbly personality. She will be a great addition to our Lady Charger volleyball program.”

Ball State ends season, Davis ends college career
The Ball State men’s basketball team saw its 2011-12 season come to an end as the ninth-seeded Cardinals dropped a 69-63 contest against eighth-seeded Western Michigan Monday night in the first round of the Mid-American Conference Tournament at University Arena.
The loss ends the Cardinals’ season at 15-15 on the year while the Broncos advance to Cleveland for the second round.
Plymouth product Randy Davis knocked down 6 of 6 free throws and dished out four assists in the loss.

TCU Athlete of the Week Jacob Box

Bremen’s Jacob Box put up a game-high 20 points as the Lions ended their season with a 63-47 loss to the host Warriors at the Class 2A Westview Sectional championship Saturday. Box put up a combined 45 points in three games at the tourney for Bremen.

Plymouth grad Jessica Centa was named to the Michiana Intercollegiate Athletic Association All-Conference basketball team last week for Saint Mary’s.
Centa led all players in the MIAA in her final season in offensive rebounds while finishing second in free throw percentage.

Triton wins 5th straight sectional

BOURBON — The mention of the inbound play that produced Clay Yeo’s sectional final-winning shot brought a smile to the Triton boys basketball star’s face.
“I was arguing with (head) coach (Jason) Groves about what play to run,” Yeo, who fired in a game-high 30 points, said. “I guess he was right.”

Lions’ sectional run ends to host Westview, 63-47

TOPEKA — Bremen came on strong at the end of the year, but not strong enough to hold off defending sectional champion Westview on its home floor.
After a 16-15 first quarter start, the Lions fell behind at the 5:32 mark of the second quarter and never recovered the lead as the host Warriors dispatched Bremen 63-47 for a repeat Sectional 35 crown Saturday.
Westview advances to the North Judson Regional next Saturday, when the Warriors play the winner of tonight’s South Adams Sectional championship between Adams Central and Fort Wayne Luers.

Glenn’s best falls short against Marian at Plymouth Sectional final

PLYMOUTH — Sometimes your best just isn’t enough.
That seemed to be the case for the John Glenn Falcons Saturday night as they lost a hard-fought battle with Mishawaka Marian, 61-56, the IHSAA Class 3A Sectional 19 Championship at Plymouth.
“We executed every part of what we wanted to execute,” said Glenn head coach Travis Hannah. “We just fell a little short tonight, and sometimes that happens.”

Plymouth gymnastics team takes third at Wawasee Sectional, advances to regional

SYRACUSE — It’s been a long time coming for the Plymouth High School gymnastics team to place third or better at the sectional level and advance to the regional round of the IHSAA gymnastics state tournament.
So long in fact that two members of that 2006 team, Dani Ramos and Dani McPherron, are now assistant coaches for the Pilgrims. After Saturday, those two can look forward to now having been both a gymnast and a coach at the regional level.

CMA advances past Carmel in hockey tournament

Culver Military Academy goalie Daniel Gaynor recorded 22 saves as CMA shut out Carmel Gold 3-0 in Class 5A state hockey tournament play at the Ice Box in South Bend Sunday.
The Eagles advance to the 5A championship against Columbus at the Pepsi Coliseum in Indianapolis Sunday, March 11 at 1:30 p.m.
Ryan Gandy, Kyle Bartelman and Michael Heidkamp all scored goals for CMA in Sunday’s win.
