Davis leads as Ball State tops 100 in win over Quest

SQUAMISH, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA — The Ball State men’s basketball team opened its foreign tour of Canada with an impressive 104-61 victory over Quest University in Squamish, British Columbia. The game was played with international basketball FIBA rules, including four 10-minute quarters.
Six different Cardinals scored in double figures in the victory, while all 11 Cardinals scored at least four points. The Cardinals scored 59 points in the second half as they hit 65.8 percent (25-of-38) from the field in the frame.

Plymouth takes 2nd at New Prairie Invite

LAPORTE — Plymouth’s season-long goal thus far has been to break 400 for 18 holes. For Tuesday’s New Prairie Invitational head coach Jack Kinney decided, heck, why not break 380?
The Lady Pilgrims reached that goal with room to spare, turning in a 376 to nose out Northern Lakes Conference foe NorthWood by two strokes and finish runner-up at the tourney, placing second behind No. 6-ranked Chesterton’s record-breaking team tally of 311 at Legacy Hills in LaPorte.

Annihilators 3rd place at NSA B 18U World Series

MUNCIE — The Indiana Annihilators 18U travel softball team, based in Rochester, finished third in the 2011 National Softball Association B North 18U World Series July 25-28 in Muncie. The team is comprised of players from Plymouth, Rochester, Caston, North Miami, Peru and Winamac.
The Annihilators started the series by placing first in the Oufield Accuracy and Touch-em All Race and placed high enough in the Round the Horn event to win the Overall Skills competition. Alanie Sroufe from Rochester was named Miss NSA for the 18U division.

OD softball player wins USFA Northern National championship

Lincy Mae Jones, a local teen from Oregon-Davis High School, recently won the 2011 United States Fastpitch Association 16U Northern National Championship with her team, based out of Plainfield. The Hurricanes went undefeated to win the 2011 USFA event, outscoring opponents 42-14 and only trailing briefly during the first game en route to securing the hardware.
The Hurricanes summer tournament schedule took them through Ohio, Illinois and Indiana.

Travis Pastrana cancels Plymouth Speedway appearance

PLYMOUTH — The Plymouth Speedway has announced that motocross driver and superstar stuntman Travis Pastrana will not attend the races on Friday as originally planned.

Plymouth wins 3-way girls golf meet

PLYMOUTH — A win is a win as they say, but Plymouth has its sights set on loftier goals as the 2011 girls golf season gets into full swing.
Led by returning junior Emily Berger’s 49, Plymouth carded a team score of 210 to trump Peru’s 222, while Caston was unable to record a team score as players forfeited with temperatures reaching into the 90s, and the Lady Pilgrims topped the field in their dual-meet season opener at a triangular match at Swan Lake Friday.

Ancilla student-athletes receive host of honors

DONALDSON — Ancilla College student-athletes Tyler Jackson, Demi Schrader, and Mark Reel highlighted a list of athletes who were recently honored for their achievements in the classroom, the college announced Friday.
Jackson and Schrader were named recipients of the NJCAA Award for Superior Academic Excellence, while Reel was a recipient of the NJCAA Award for Exemplary Academic Achievement.

Mystic Hills chosen for Pete Dye Golf Trail

CULVER — Mystic Hills Golf Course finds itself in the spotlight as the first stop on the Pete Dye Golf Trail.
The collection of seven unique courses personally selected by famed golf course architect and Indiana resident Dye — who boasts more than 20 courses within the state — officially launched July 28 and represent a varied array of design elements, topography and difficulty.

Culver Military product Suter to enter Hockey Hall of Fame

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Gary Suter, a 1982 graduate of Culver Military Academy, will be enshrined as a member of the United States Hockey Hall of Fame Class of 2011.
He will be joined by Chicago Blackhawks teammate Chris Chelios, Mike Emrick, Ed Snider, and Keith Tkachuk, it was announced Monday by USA Hockey. The five-member class will be formally installed into the Hall in Chicago this fall, with a date to be announced in the near future.

INDIANAPOLIS — The Jeff Gordon Children’s Foundation celebrated 10 years of support for Riley Hospital for Children during a news conference in the hospital’s atrium Thursday.
