CMA wins Plymouth Sectional

January 30, 2012

PLYMOUTH — Culver Military head coach Matt Behling might have had a presentiment about his team’s sectional championship Saturday.
Knowing what was at stake heading into the Plymouth tournament, CMA’s wrestlers had the best week of practice Behling said he’s had as a coach. The Eagles claimed a trio of championships and eight regional-qualifying finishes to earn the program its first team sectional championship in 15 years, beating out second-place Warsaw by a slim 184.5-180 margin.

January 30, 2012

PLYMOUTH — The Pilgrims went deep on their bench again, and Plymouth won on back-to-back nights for the first time this season with a 52-45 victory over visiting Mishawaka at The Rock Saturday night.
Plymouth led from the 7:40 mark of the first quarter on and held off MIshawaka at the line down the stretch, following up a 60-53 win over Northern Lakes Conference foe Northridge Friday night in the third time this season the Pilgrims have played on back-to-back nights.

Pilgrims have Mercer

January 28, 2012

PLYMOUTH — Plymouth’s coaching staff has been working with sophomore Mack Mercer this week on finishing strong.
Message received.
The 6-9 sophomore center finished at an 11-for-14 clip off the blocks and along the baseline — including a pair of crowd-pleasing two-handed dunks in the first half — on his way to a career-high 31 points, and the Pilgrims held off a tenacious Northridge team, 60-53 on Homecoming Night at The Rock Friday.

Fencing for a Cure

January 28, 2012

CULVER — When Culver Academies’ Desirae Major ’12 (Olathe, Kan.) was a sophomore, a senior on the fencing team talked about using the sport as a way to raise funds for charity. It would also be an interesting way to complete the senior service project. The best way, it seemed, would be to host a tournament with registration fees going to charity.
Major, who is a nationally-ranked saber fencer, thought it was a great idea at the time. But the tournament never got off the ground.

LaVille edges Argos, 40-39

January 27, 2012

LAKEVILLE — After a strong performance in the Bi-County semifinals Saturday, LaVille’s Kelsey Gurtner got tapped for the start against Argos.
It was her finish that made the biggest difference Thursday, however.
The sophomore guard put in some late heroics as she caught a quick outlet pass from Jesse Feitz on a missed Argos free throw with 15 seconds remaining, then drove the length of the floor for a slashing layup that proved to be the game-winner as scrappy LaVille edged the Class A No. 10 Dragons 40-39 in a back-and-forth thriller at Dale E. Cox Gymnasium.

Wrestling state series opens this weekend in last year of team tournament

January 26, 2012

PLYMOUTH — It’s the last chance for squads around the state to vie for a team title as the 74th Annual IHSAA Wrestling State Tournament Series opens this weekend.
This year’s tournament marks the last year for the team state series after the IHSAA’s executive committee voted unanimously in November to drop it in lieu of an exclusively individual tournament beginning in 2012-13.
