Lady Trojans down Dragons at OD

October 24, 2013

HAMLET — Coaches often talk about the difficulty of beating the same team three times in a single season. Try four times on for size.
The Lady Trojans got off to a slow start in a nip-tuck first game but stepped on the gas in the second set to beat area-rival Argos 25-20, 25-16, 25-16 at the Class A Oregon-Davis Sectional-opener Tuesday night in Hamlet.
It was the fourth time the two teams have gone head to head this season, and all have borne similar results.

Dragons three-peat at Peru Regional

October 23, 2013

PERU — Familiar opponent, new stakes and a new venue. Different game, same result.
The last time that Argos played Faith Christian, the Dragons only needed one half to put their opponents away, 3-0, after lightning cut the game short at the intermission back on Aug. 30 at Argos. At Saturday’s Peru Regional championship, the two teams were locked in a scoreless tie through 66 minutes.

Quick start leads Argos to regional win over Westview

October 23, 2013

ARGOS — For the second straight Saturday, the Argos girls’ soccer team had a quick start, and the result was a 2-1 win over Westview for an IHSAA Regional title.
Kennedy Binkley’s pass found Courtney Dunlap and the freshman striker hit her 18th goal of the season less than two minutes in. Forty seconds later, senior midfielder Shelby Sanders took the host’s first corner kick and watched the ball curl directly into the goal. Three minutes into the match, Argos was up 2-0.

October 18, 2013

PLYMOUTH — Adjusting has been the story of the year defensively at Plymouth.
A group of NLC quarterbacks — all with unique skills — have tested the Rockies and shown a metamorphosis of the game of football even at the high school level. From the pro’s on down, the quarterback position is at a premium.

Dragons dominate at Peru

October 18, 2013

PERU — The final score was 9-2, but don’t be fooled — Thursday’s Peru Regional semifinal between Argos and upset-minded Oak Hill was never really that close.
The Golden Eagles entered the game hoping for a reprisal after falling to the two-time defending champion Dragons the past two seasons at regionals, but Argos was simply dominant, jumping out to a 3-0 halftime lead and stretching the margin to 6-0 with a flurry of goals in the first six minutes of the second stanza.

Area teams advance at CMA Sectionals

October 17, 2013

CULVER — With the approach of the postseason at the flat, fast Culver Academies course approaching, Plymouth cross country coach Jami Holm switched up her team’s training regimen last week.
Holm changed the Pilgrims’ workouts from longer distances to shorter, speed-building runs. That added speed paid dividends at Tuesday’s sectional as Plymouth’s boys team edged out Tippecanoe Valley for the last ticket out to regionals this weekend.
