Triton wins 5th straight sectional

March 5, 2012

BOURBON — The mention of the inbound play that produced Clay Yeo’s sectional final-winning shot brought a smile to the Triton boys basketball star’s face.
“I was arguing with (head) coach (Jason) Groves about what play to run,” Yeo, who fired in a game-high 30 points, said. “I guess he was right.”

Lions’ sectional run ends to host Westview, 63-47

March 5, 2012

TOPEKA — Bremen came on strong at the end of the year, but not strong enough to hold off defending sectional champion Westview on its home floor.
After a 16-15 first quarter start, the Lions fell behind at the 5:32 mark of the second quarter and never recovered the lead as the host Warriors dispatched Bremen 63-47 for a repeat Sectional 35 crown Saturday.
Westview advances to the North Judson Regional next Saturday, when the Warriors play the winner of tonight’s South Adams Sectional championship between Adams Central and Fort Wayne Luers.

Glenn’s best falls short against Marian at Plymouth Sectional final

March 5, 2012

PLYMOUTH — Sometimes your best just isn’t enough.
That seemed to be the case for the John Glenn Falcons Saturday night as they lost a hard-fought battle with Mishawaka Marian, 61-56, the IHSAA Class 3A Sectional 19 Championship at Plymouth.
“We executed every part of what we wanted to execute,” said Glenn head coach Travis Hannah. “We just fell a little short tonight, and sometimes that happens.”

So long in fact that two members of that 2006 team, Dani Ramos and Dani McPherron, are now assistant coaches for the Pilgrims. After Saturday, those two can look forward to now having been both a gymnast and a coach at the regional level.

Changes put Triton in familiar place in win over Culver

March 3, 2012

BOURBON — Triton’s boys basketball team needed some sort of in-game spark against an inspired Culver Community squad Friday.
A couple of key adjustments served the purpose.
Moved from a wing to the point against Culver’s active 2-3 zone, Triton’s Clay Yeo fired in a game-high 23 points, while defensively the 6-foot-6 junior locked down on Culver leading scorer Trent Elliott in the second half to lead the Trojans to a 46-41 come-from-behind Class A Sectional 51 semifinal win at The Trojan Trench.
