Triton trumps Plymouth 9-7

April 6, 2012

PLYMOUTH — Coming from one baseball country to another, Japanese foreign exchange student Keita Morikawa already had the skill set to play outfield. It’s just taken him a little while for his bat to catch up with his glove.
On Friday, Morikawa’s batting proved to be the difference as the Triton eight hole hitter’s go-ahead sacrifice fly to left in the top of the sixth broke a 7-7 tie and put the Trojans over the top in an eventual 9-7 win over host Plymouth at Bill Nixon Field.

Plymouth downs Falcons in opener

April 6, 2012

WALKERTON — There were some rough spots for both teams, but there were also positives for both Plymouth and John Glenn to take away from their girls tennis opener Thursday.
A mostly young Plymouth squad won in convincing fashion on four courts, while Glenn scored its first match point against Plymouth in a long time at No. 3 singles as the Lady Pilgrims started out the season with a 4-1 team win in a blustery girls tennis opener on the road.

Lady Pilgrims lose opener, 5-2

April 5, 2012

PLYMOUTH — After canceling its pre-season scrimmage with LaVille last week, Plymouth’s youth showed a bit in its opener Wednesday.
An overthrow from short to first with a runner heading to second in the top of the third inning cost the Lady Pilgrims three runs, and that error ended up making all the difference as Plymouth fell 5-2 to a surging Mishawaka squad at home.

Pitching woes cost Plymouth vs St. Joe

April 5, 2012

PLYMOUTH — Plymouth head baseball coach Tony Plothow had concerns about the inexperience of his pitching staff coming into the season.
Those concerns became a reality Wednesday night at Bill Nixon Field in a six-inning, 10-0 loss to the visiting South Bend St. Joseph’s Indians.
Plymouth used three pitchers in the game, each appearing on the mound for the first time ever in a varsity uniform.

Pilgrims open season with split versus Mishawaka, LaPorte

April 4, 2012

PLYMOUTH — The first meet of the year is always a little dicey. Especially with a young team. Even more so coming off of spring break.
Nevertheless, Plymouth’s boys track team got off to a solid start Tuesday, splitting a three-way meet with a loss to a deep Mishawaka squad — which put up 69 points to top the field — and a narrow 32-30 victory over LaPorte at home at The Rockpile.

Area teams reloaded as 2012 baseball season begins

April 4, 2012

The past is past.
Following Culver Com-munity’s first sectional championship in 25 years last season, that’s the message head coach Mike Elliott and his staff are sending to the Cavaliers this year.
With just four starters back in pitcher and utility player Collin Stevens, second baseman/ pitcher Sam Hissong, short stop/ pitcher Kyle Vlach and center fielder Nick Pritz, Elliott is hoping his largely inexperienced team can find an identity of its own in 2012 rather than resting on the laurels of last season’s historic finish.
