Benn becomes first CMA player drafted by MLL

Johns Hopkins attackman Brandon Benn ‘10 was selected by the Chesapeake Bayhawks in the fifth round of the Major League Lacrosse collegiate draft on Jan. 10. Benn became the first Culver Military Academy player selected to play at the professional level.
Preparing for his senior season at Hopkins, Benn was the 40th pick overall. Benn has led the Blue Jays in scoring for the last two years. He is first Hopkins player to score more than 30 goals in two consecutive season since 1998-1999 and is carrying a 16-game goal-scoring streak into the 2014 season.

Unbeaten LaPorte rallies past Lady Pilgrims

PLYMOUTH — Plymouth had a great first half, but LaPorte had a better second as they were able to come from behind to beat the Lady Pilgrims by a 65-45 final.
While Plymouth played the upset card in the first half, the Lady Slicers showed why they are unbeaten and considered one of the state’s elite teams in the second, striking from 3-point distance with deadly accuracy and running the floor with authority to put up 30 third quarter points.
But the first half belonged to the Lady Pilgrims.

Eagles edge West Lafayette in OT
Devonte Campbell scored 25 points, Elijah Miller put up 17, and Culver Military edged out West Lafayette 56-54 in overtime at home at The Academies Tuesday night.
The Eagles converted 12 of 17 free throws and won both the battle of the boards, 28-22, and the turnover battle, 11-14, in the win, which pushed the team out to 5-1 on the season in its first game back after a long holiday layover.
West Lafayette was led by three players in double figures — William Mbongo with 16, Trev Parker with 12 and Jared Snoble with 11.

Just 24 hours after a disappointing NLC loss at Elkhart Memorial, Plymouth again struggled to close at Tippecanoe Valley, falling by a 44-42 final on the road in Akron Saturday night.

Pilgrims fall short at Memorial

ELKHART — Plymouth arrived at historic North Side Gymnasium with high hopes of breaking into the Northern Lakes Conference win column, and for most of three quarters, the Pilgrims’ goal was well within reach.
But Elkhart Memorial used a 22-12 fourth quarter to surge past Plymouth’s grasp in a 60-46 win over the Pilgrims in Elkhart Friday night.
According to head coach Ryan Bales, the Devil was in the details.

Cavs nearly double up Cougars
Class A No. 10 Culver Community landed four players in double figures en route to a 60-31 Northern State Conference girls basketball win at New Prairie on Friday.
Kayla Shaffer led the way for the Cavs with 17 points, 10 rebounds, seven steals, and six assists, followed closely by Donna Zehner with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Angela Lewellen and Mickella Hardy chipped in 12 points apiece for Culver.

Lady Pilgrims roll at New Prairie

NEW CARLISLE — The signs outside of the New Prairie gymnasium read “Welcome to our House.” Once the Lady Pilgrims settled in, they made themselves comfortable.
After a back-and-forth first quarter, Plymouth jumped out to a 35-20 halftime lead and never looked back, rolling to a 59-35 win over the host Lady Cougars on the road in New Carlisle Thursday night.
The Pilgrims hit 24-of-42 (57 percent) of their shots from the floor in the win, and eight different players made a balanced scoresheet in the win.
According to Duncan, it all came down to aggression.
