ANGOLA – Throughout the regular season, the Plymouth football team struggled under adversity.
In Friday’s sectional contest at Angola, the Rockies responded when it mattered most.
Plymouth battled back from a 14-0 deficit in the first quarter and capitalized with scores on each of eight Angola turnovers on its way to a 49-21 victory in a wild Class 4A Sectional 11 opener.

Pilgrims top scrappy Cougars in 4

PLYMOUTH — New Prairie’s stout defense made Plymouth earn it, but the Lady Pilgrims rose to the occasion.
Plymouth battled back from a 25-11 loss in the opening set to hand the Lady Cougars a four-set defeat, 11-25, 25-23, 25-18, 26-24, in a scrappy Class 3A Plymouth Sectional quarterfinal Thursday at The Rock.
The Pilgrims now move on to face Culver Girls Academy — which bested Jimtown in three games in the opening quarterfinal Thursday — in the late semifinal at the Plymouth tourney Saturday at 12:30 p.m.

PLYMOUTH — In the midst of Thursday’s sectional quarterfinal, Culver Girls Academy teammates Katy Bjornson and Abby Jeffirs got a little friendly competition going.
The outside hitters had a contest to see who could rack up the most kills, and while Bjornson edged out Jeffirs 13 kills to 12, both were winners as they helped lead the Lady Eagles to a convincing three-set win over Jimtown, 25-20, 25-12, 25-14 at the Class 3A Plymouth Sectional.

Teams leaving past behind them as football tourney starts tonight

It’s a new day.
Area teams are putting the past behind them, whether good or bad, as they enter the first round of the 39th Annual IHSAA Football Tournament tonight.
It’s been a rough year for Plymouth. The Rockies finished the regular season with the program’s worst record in recent memory at 3-6, but the team is looking for a fresh start as it travels to Angola (5-4) for a first-round Class 4A Sectional 11 match-up at 7:30 p.m.

LaVille beats Fremont
at Class 2A Westview tourney
LaVille beat Fremont in four games in a Class 2A Westview Sectional quarterfinal Thursday, 25-19, 27-25, 13-25, 25-13.
The Lady Lancers move on to play Prairie Heights — which beat Central Noble in another four-set quarterfinal Thursday — in a Westview semifinal at 11 a.m. Saturday, followed by a 12:30 p.m. match between host Westview and Bremen.
Middle hitter Katie Berger put away a team-leading 19 kills for LaVille, while outside hitter Kelsey Gurtner had nine, and fellow outside hitter Shelby Low finished with six.

CULVER — Trailing late, Triton coach Terrin Meister had confidence in her team. But after more than four nip-tuck games with Marquette, she figured the outcome would likely boil down to who wanted it more.

Ancilla men’s soccer to participate on “Kick Cancer Team”

DONALDSON — The Ancilla College men’s soccer team is participating in a nationwide fundraiser by the National Foundation for Cancer Research called “NFCR’s Kick Cancer Team.” The campaign invites soccer teams around the country to participate by committing to donate proceeds from at least one game or special event to NFCR.
Ancilla’s game for NFCR will take place Oct. 22, 2011 at 2 p.m. versus Lakeland Community College on Ancilla College’s Charger Fields.

St. Joe eliminates Glenn in 3

PLYMOUTH — John Glenn hung tough for the first few points, but St. Joseph’s took control mid-way through game 1. By the time the Lady Falcons recovered, it was too late.

Bremen's Pfeiffer, Hueni named WHME Student Athletes of the Week

BREMEN — Bremen High School student-athletes Jenna Pfeiffer and Ben Hueni were recognized as the WHME TV-46 “Student Athletes of the Week” during the Bremen-Jimtown football game played Oct. 7.  WHME TV-46  presents a weekly award to honor outstanding student-athletes in the communities featured on its High School Game of the Week.  Pfeiffer and Hueni were selected to represent Bremen High School for their participation in athletics, academic achievement and citizenship.

The Lincoln eighth grade football team clinched a spot in the NELMSC championship game by defeating Whitko 44-8.
