‘Old Way’ or Wrong way? Local coaches weigh in on Mike Rice

April 5, 2013

PLYMOUTH — The footage has gone “viral” on the Internet, and many have seen the tirades of now former Rutgers basketball coach Mike Rice.
Rice was fired by the university after being caught on camera verbally and physically abusing players in practice. The repercussions of his actions have also led to the firing of Rutgers Athletic Director Tim Pernetti.
Rice’s abuse of players led to a polarizing discussion of just how much is too much when it comes to being demanding of players and led some to say that this sort of thing, “...happened all the time in the old days.”

Boys track
Culver tops LaVille
Culver Community’s boys track team opened its season Wednesday with a 72-52 win over visiting LaVille.
The Cavaliers went one-two in both hurdles events and won all three relays en route to the team win.
Matt Hurford claimed top finishes in both hurdles races and in the shot put for Culver.
LaVille’s best finishes were in distance events and short dashes — where the Lancers went one-two in the 1600 and won the 100 and 200 as well as the 800 — and in the discus, where the visitors swept the top three spots.

Pilgrims bring out the bats in win

April 5, 2013

PLYMOUTH — What a difference a day makes. Especially when it comes to hitting.
Plymouth’s Pilgrims struggled to put together big hits on Wednesday night in a loss to South Bend St. Joe. Less than 24 hours later they had hits in abundance on the way to a win over previously undefeated South Central 10-6.
The Pilgrims could manage just two hits on Wednesday but exploded for 11 on Thursday with leadoff man and shortstop Justin Drudge leading the way with a double, triple and an RBI as part of a three-hit night and scoring two runs himself. Riley Cartwright added a two-hit, two-RBI night.

Lady Pilgrims split track opener at home

April 5, 2013

PLYMOUTH — Plymouth’s girls track team may not have earned the sweep in their opener Thursday, but all in all, it was a pretty good showing.
The Lady Pilgrims wound up with the split on their home track, beating LaPorte 76-52 and falling to Mishawaka 72.33-55.66. But it was the closest margin head coach Paul Patrick has seen in recent years, and it was good start for an overwhelmingly young team that has been seriously limited in meaningful practice time due to a particularly cold early spring season.

Samuelson, Lacefield lead PHS boys in track opener at LaPorte

April 5, 2013

LaPORTE — If weight events were all that mattered, Dan Samuelson and Adam Lacefield would have lifted the Plymouth boys track team to victory by themselves Thursday night.
Problem is, there’s a lot of running and jumping involved in your average high school meet. And the Pilgrims needed help in those areas.
Samuelson and Lacefield split 1-2 finishes in the shot put and discus, but Plymouth fell to LaPorte, 80-51, in a triangular meet at Kiwanis Field.
The Pilgrims also dropped a 90.5-40.5 decision to Mishawaka.

Lady Pilgrims fall
The Plymouth Lady Pilgrims kicked off their softball season with a tough 18-0 loss in five innings at Mishawaka High School.
Seniors Morgan O’ Neal and April Hampton had only lone base hits for the Pilgrims, who had several baserunners but struggled to get across home plate.
The JV Lady pilgrims had a bright start, opening with two runs, but later finished the night on the wrong side of a 13-3 effort.
Plymouth will be back in action on Saturday at Laporte at 11 a.m.

Plymouth falls at the end to St. Joe

April 4, 2013

PLYMOUTH — In baseball, it often comes down to who will flinch at the final challenge, and on Wednesday at least it was Plymouth’s Pilgrims (0-1) who flinched at the end, falling to South Bend St. Joe by an 8-3 final.
Only those in attendance would know it was tied at three headed to the final six outs.

Lady Dragons earn 1st win on the road in Culver

April 4, 2013

CULVER — It wasn’t always pretty, but the Lady Dragons got their first win Wednesday.
Argos jumped out to an 11-0 lead over the first four innings and held off a tenacious Culver Community squad to break into the win column, 20-6, on the road in Culver.
“This is the first game that I’ve had all of my players available to play. The first game I didn’t have four of my players, so this was more of a team effort,” said Argos softball coach Alyssa Thayer.

Baseball
Judson nips Culver
North Judson plated a run in the top of the seventh, and the Bluejays hung on for a narrow 2-1 victory in their season-opener at Culver Community Wednesday night.
The game was a pitchers’ duel between Judson’s staff of Tyler Tunis and David Jacim and Culver’s Kyle Vlach as the trio combined to give up only four total hits in the opener.
The Cavs finished with just one hit at the game, a double from Nick Pritz, and the home team recorded three errors as they slipped to an 0-1 start.
Culver travels to Caston tonight with a 5:30 p.m. EST start time.
