TCU Athlete of the Week Kyle Liedtky

April 8, 2013

King's Jewelry Athlete of the Week Allie Wright

April 8, 2013

Plymouth’s Allie Wright followed up a two-win performance in the Lady Pilgrims’ track opener Thursday with another two-win finish as Plymouth won the CGA Relays Saturday. Wright won the 400 Thursday and was a winner on Plymouth’s 3200 relay Saturday. She was a winner on the Pilgrims’ 1600-meter relay both meets.

Glenn responds after 1st loss, trumps Zebras in 8 at Rochester DH

April 8, 2013

WALKERTON — The John Glenn baseball team answered back from its first loss of the season with an eight-inning win in a doubleheader versus Rochester Saturday.
The Falcons succumbed 7-3 in the opener but battled back for a narrow 9-8 win in an extra-inning second game to earn the split.
“We always play a spirited doubleheader with John Glenn,” said Rochester baseball coach Bryan Hooker. “Year in and year out it seems like we split. Every season this is a good way to gauge our teams with this doubleheader. I hope we continue this for a long time.”

Girls track
Plymouth sets scoring record at CGA Relays
Plymouth’s girls track and field team set a new meet scoring record with 140 points, and the Lady Pilgrims won the 16th Annual Culver Girls Academy Relays Saturday. Host CGA finished in third place just 0.3 of a point behind LaPorte, which took second with an 86.3 score.
Plymouth won six different events at the relay meet, which saw occasional gale force winds on the campus at the Culver Academies.

Lady Falcons win opener in 5

April 5, 2013

WALKERTON — On a cold evening in Walkerton, John Glenn’s bats got hot quick. The Lady Falcons’ hitting cooled off in the third inning, but their initial outburst was more than enough.
Glenn put up 10 runs over the first two innings and backed up a strong start at the plate with five frames of shutout softball to lift the team to a five-inning, 10-0 win over visiting Caston in the Falcons’ season-opener Friday.

‘Old Way’ or Wrong way? Local coaches weigh in on Mike Rice

April 5, 2013

PLYMOUTH — The footage has gone “viral” on the Internet, and many have seen the tirades of now former Rutgers basketball coach Mike Rice.
Rice was fired by the university after being caught on camera verbally and physically abusing players in practice. The repercussions of his actions have also led to the firing of Rutgers Athletic Director Tim Pernetti.
Rice’s abuse of players led to a polarizing discussion of just how much is too much when it comes to being demanding of players and led some to say that this sort of thing, “...happened all the time in the old days.”

Boys track
Culver tops LaVille
Culver Community’s boys track team opened its season Wednesday with a 72-52 win over visiting LaVille.
The Cavaliers went one-two in both hurdles events and won all three relays en route to the team win.
Matt Hurford claimed top finishes in both hurdles races and in the shot put for Culver.
LaVille’s best finishes were in distance events and short dashes — where the Lancers went one-two in the 1600 and won the 100 and 200 as well as the 800 — and in the discus, where the visitors swept the top three spots.

Pilgrims bring out the bats in win

April 5, 2013

PLYMOUTH — What a difference a day makes. Especially when it comes to hitting.
Plymouth’s Pilgrims struggled to put together big hits on Wednesday night in a loss to South Bend St. Joe. Less than 24 hours later they had hits in abundance on the way to a win over previously undefeated South Central 10-6.
The Pilgrims could manage just two hits on Wednesday but exploded for 11 on Thursday with leadoff man and shortstop Justin Drudge leading the way with a double, triple and an RBI as part of a three-hit night and scoring two runs himself. Riley Cartwright added a two-hit, two-RBI night.

Lady Pilgrims split track opener at home

April 5, 2013

PLYMOUTH — Plymouth’s girls track team may not have earned the sweep in their opener Thursday, but all in all, it was a pretty good showing.
The Lady Pilgrims wound up with the split on their home track, beating LaPorte 76-52 and falling to Mishawaka 72.33-55.66. But it was the closest margin head coach Paul Patrick has seen in recent years, and it was good start for an overwhelmingly young team that has been seriously limited in meaningful practice time due to a particularly cold early spring season.
