Not a stupid question

May 23, 2012

By Lydia Beers, Staff Writer

This week, my thoughts for this column were inspired by a comment I heard someone make: “This might be a stupid question, but…”
I am a firm believer in the saying that there are no stupid questions. If you don’t know something and you need to ask about it, that doesn’t make you stupid. I would argue that it actually makes you smart.

It's time for a belting

May 23, 2012

The ancient fax machine in the office rang, coughed, sputtered, groaned, whined, and finally churned out a most urgent news release, a duplicate of one received just days earlier.
This information sent from two local law enforcement agencies originated from the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute. It sent a stern warning and promised to show no mercy to a most insidious brand of scofflaw, punctuating the opening sentence with the word, “beware.”

Things to do in - and around - Culver

May 11, 2012

By Jeff Kenney, Culver Citizen editor and Pilot News Group staff writer

As alluded to in a previous column, Culver is headed full-bore into its “summer-ish” schedule, even if that time period really kicks off in late April, and that of course means warm weather. It goes without saying that Culver is a sort of outdoor paradise (or I hope it does), and while we could do a lot better about it, our family has always tried to take advantage of that — heck, it’s a big part of why we choose to live here!

Down the Indian Trails

May 3, 2012

By Jeff Kenney, Editor of the Culver Citizen

I remember an episode of the TV series “The Wonder Years” in which the youthful main characters learned that a small but beloved patch of woodland in their area would be bulldozed in favor of a parking lot. Rather than chaining themselves to the trees as they had contemplated, they spontaneously found themselves playing tag one last time, after dark, in the woods, the episode ending with the usual nostalgia-inducing, wistful music and commentary.

Dryer fire & cat in the ’mat

April 23, 2012

Our littlest house guest, Kitty, earned an award this week. Kitty, so called because no one in my house could agree on a name for the feline that wandered up to my back door about 6 months ago.
The rest takes a little longer to explain.
It all started a few months ago when my dryer started making a horrible squeak. Then, it stopped. Then, it started. We figured out that if we only dried about half a load at a time, the drum wouldn’t yell at us as often or as loudly. So that’s how we’ve gotten by for the past couple months.

No more excuses

Second verse, same as the first...
This week, much like last week, flashed by and before I knew it, it was time to sit down and write about my goals I accomplished for a healthier me this week.
Well, I hit none of them to be honest. How embarrassing is it to admit that? My weight has maintained, because while I haven’t made many changes, that includes both for better or worse. So I guess I could say it’s been a successful week a way that I haven’t gained.

The challenge begins...

This week, Staff Writer Lydia Beers and I share with you the first week of our fitness challenge. This column will be published Saturdays throughout the Best Loser weight-loss competition, in which we are both participants. — Maggie Nixon, Editor

What’s bothering me about my “diet”?

Again with the spring/winter weather?

January 18, 2012

Again this week, we saw temperatures topping the high 40s, and down to the teens. What's your take on the current weather conditions?

This week's question: What's your take on our weather?

December 13, 2011

Managing Editor

What's with this weather? Freezing cold Saturday and then back to mild on Sunday. Today, we're lower 40s but will be wet and up to 50 by Wednesday and Thursday. Too many people are begging for snow, but I'm betting it'll be here by Christmas morning. Just in time for Santa's sleigh...

I know, I know, "Welcome to Indiana weather. You new in town?" is usually the response I get when I bring up the topic of "What's with this weather?"

Do you have a clue to help me out?

Born and raised - Indiana - and still clueless.
