Being always ready for visitors

Late Christmas my oldest son, his wife, and six children arrived at our home to celebrate Christmas. Four adults, one youth, three children, and an energetic, chocolate lab joined them the following afternoon. Eighteen of us enjoyed a wonderful Christmas feast as we celebrated the birth of Jesus.
In preparation for our visitors, Diane and I needed to get the following done:
1. All of my neatly stacked piles of paper on the dining room table waiting to be processed needed to be moved.

At one time, during the mid 1930s to the mid 1950s, neighborhood grocery stores were plentiful and were within walking distance as they were designed to blend in with the neighborhood and specialized in serving their needs. Some of them were homes that maybe had one or two rooms devoted to the grocery business. It was the “convenience store” of its time.

Baron Hill walks to save his career

BLOOMINGTON — It was his seventh and final mile, heading down South Walnut Street when a motorcyclist preparing to saddle up in a parking lot saw U.S. Rep. Baron Hill walk by.
“Thanks for all you do,” Jason Evans-Groth called out from inside his helmet.
Hill smiled, walked over and shook the man’s hand. The congressman is in a tough reelection battle in a hellish year for Democrats. The congressman had preached to his base all day that the pundits were spewing far too much gloom and doom.

A favorite recipe for ‘Indiana salsa’

Some time ago Janet Born sent me this recipe. Now is a good time to pass it on because the ingredients are now ripening in the gardens.
The recipe reminds me of a similar concoction my mother used to make from our garden in the fall when I was a small child, and it sounds as if it would lend interesting taste to winter’s beans and potatoes. Also it would make good usage of surplus remaining in the garden.

Home, sweet home

Does your house grate on your nerves? Perhaps you have suffered the same mauve-and-blue-geese wallpaper in your living room for decades. Your children have tie-dyed your sofa with condiment colors. Your yard looks August-scraggly, and your garden resembles a vacant lot.
What can a person do to banish discontent with her home? Besides work on it, I mean.
The obvious answer: go camping. Preferably tent camping, during the hottest, muggiest week of the year. I guarantee your home will look 200 percent better when you return. Mine does.
