ROCHESTER — Gordon Leroy Betcher, 72, of 2817 Barrett Road, Rochester died at 11:16 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2011 at Woodlawn Hospital.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy, at home; sons, David (Lisa) Betcher of Naperville, Ill., Dan (Karla) Betcher of Rochester; sister, Shirley (Hank) Kirschsieper of Ridgecrest, Calif.; and eight grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 25, 2011 in the Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St., Rochester. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday and one hour prior to the service in the funeral home Sunday.

PLYMOUTH — Georgina “Gina” M. Onofre, 35, of Plymouth, died Monday morning, Sept. 19, 2011.
She is survived by five children: Tyler Lee Stiles, Shawn Austin Stiles, Cruz Anthony Galanda all of Plymouth and Monica Marie Onofre and Joseph Armando Onofre of Pueblo, Mexico; mother, Cynthia and stepfather, Harold Tabor Sr. of Plymouth; father, Dallas Galanda of Baroda, Mich.; sister, Sarah E. Tabor and brother, Harold W. Tabor Jr. both of Plymouth; and grandmothers, Dorothy M. Pope of Plymouth, and Ida Mae Galanda of Bridgman, Mich.

BREMEN — Dale J. Sherk, 87, of Bremen passed away Sept. 18, 2011 at the Elkhart Center for Hospice Care. Dale was born Feb. 10, 1924 in Bremen to Delbert J. and Alice G. (Albert) Sherk. He married Kathleen E. Wirt Dec. 31, 1943; she preceded him in death Feb. 28, 2007.

PLYMOUTH — Jose C. Mercado Sr., 45, of 1740 Pine Road, Plymouth, died Sunday, Sept. 18, 2011, at 6:38 a.m., at Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, Mishawaka.
He is survived by his wife, Angelica; their four sons, Edgar, Eccor, Erick, and Jose, Jr., all of Plymouth; his four sisters, of Texas; his brother, Daniel of LaPorte; and two other brothers, of Texas.

PLYMOUTH — With 34 goals on the season, LaVille striker Jordyn Williams knows how to put pressure on a team’s defense.
Williams scored an unassisted equalizer in the seventh minute to tie the game up at 1-all, and his pressure inside the box late resulted in a Plymouth own-goal in the 77th minute to put the visiting Lancers over the top in a Senior Night spoiler at Kindt Soccerplex Thursday.

NSC tourney opens
Northern State Conference round robin winner Triton went 4-0, while host Bremen went 3-0, John Glenn went 1-5, and LaVille went 1-6 as the NSC Tournament convened Thursday at Leeper Park in Bremen.
Jeff Ross won at 1 singles and Lucas Shafer won at 3 singles, while Josh Shafer and Austin Kanarr won their match at 1 doubles, and Wil Rettinger and Jackson Downing won at 2 doubles for the Trojans.
Briley Bollenbacher won at 1 singles, while Brad Foster won at 2 singles, and Nate Strehler and Joe Zeltwanger won at 2 doubles for the Lions.

Female inmate dies at Marshall County Jail

Georgina Orofre, an inmate at the Marshall County Jail, died Monday unexpectedly. An autopsy performed Wednesday indicated that Orofre had died of natural causes. Marshall County coroner Bill Cleavenger attended the autopsy along with an Indiana State Police investigator. Cleavenger said that there was no evidence to indicate that Orofre's death had any connection to her incarceration for approximately two weeks prior to her death. Orofre received immediate medical care by the jail staff prior to the arrival of Plymouth paramedics.

Falloween Fest this weekend in Walkerton

WALKERTON — Fun, food and fundraising come together at John Glenn High School again this weekend for the third Falloween Fest Sept. 23 - 25.
“It’s business as usual here at the school as everything sets up,” said Glenn Principal William Morton. “Then for three days the festival takes over and it’s back to business as usual.”
The unique fundraiser brings in money for scholarships for Glenn students and has raised over $32,000 for the cause. It is also a unique way for the school to interact with the community.

Board views design concept for park

PLYMOUTH — The Plymouth Redevelopment Commission got its first look at design concepts for the proposed downtown park. Appearing before the Commission this week was Michael Reese, landscape architect of the Troyer Group of Mishawaka.
Reese passed out five hand-sketched concept drawings and asked for feedback on what parts of each drawing they preferred. Reese said they would like to narrow down the choices prior to a public meeting on the matter.

Area football teams get back to basics in Week 6

For several area teams, Week 6 is about sweating the fundamentals and bouncing back.
Nothing takes away the taste of a tough loss like a victory, and no one wants one more than Plymouth.
The Rockies (3-2, 2-1 NLC) suffered a bruising defeat at Elkhart Memorial last week. The Chargers held Plymouth’s run game to a mere 123 yards to snap a three-game win streak and handed the visitors their first Northern Lakes Conference loss of the year 35-0, the first shutout since eighth-year head coach John Barron took the reins in 2004.
