United Way rings out 50th celebration

PLYMOUTH — It was a celebration that took 50 years in the making but it was well worth the wait.
Fifty years ago, local leaders formed an organization to lend a helping hand and contribute to a better way of life in Marshall County. From its early forms to becoming the United Way of Marshall County, the agency has truly done all it can to help many organizations that have made a difference in the lives of residents.

BREMEN — Harold Eshelman, 86, of Bremen, formerly of South Bend, died at 4:35 p.m. April 5, 2011 at in Bremen Health Care.
He is survived by sisters: Clara Webb of Osceola, and Betty Richards, Patricia Promroy, Mary Jones, Phyllis Northcutt, and Cindy Keyser, all of South Bend; two brothers, Richard Shank of Jacksonville, Fla. and Thomas Shank of Elkhart; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will take place from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 16 at Mishler Funeral Home in Bremen.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. aSaturday at the funeral home.

PLYMOUTH — Joyce I. Dawson, 85, of Heber City, Utah, formerly of Plymouth, Ind., died of natural causes in the Rocky Mountain Care Center, Heber City, Utah.
Joyce was born in South Bend, Ind., July 14, 1925. She was the daughter of Ray and Nancy Yoder Granning. She attended South Bend Schools.
March 3, 1946, in South Bend, she and Charles E. Dawson, Jr., were married. Charles died April 16, 1992.

PLYMOUTH — Barry F. Wiscons, age 64, of 2401 N. Michigan Street #37, Plymouth, passed away at 7:28 a.m., Monday, April 11, 2011, at his home. 
Barry was born April 16, 1946, in Chicago, Ill., to Frank H. Wiscons and Louise (Nardiello) Wiscons. He was the second child, and the first son born, of six children. Barry was retired, from the Holiday Inn in Plymouth, as manager, after 25 years of service. He loved nature, animals, enjoyed taking walks in the park, and handing out treats to his “grand-pets.”

Bremen edges Plymouth for 1st win

BREMEN — The Lady Lions needed a little help, but they got their first win.
Bremen broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the seventh inning as freshman pinch hitter Lexi Pate scored the winning run on a throwing error from third to top visiting Plymouth 2-1 Tuesday.
“That was a fun one,” said Bremen head coach Josh Walter. “We just battled back at the end and made the runs happen when we had to.

Locals want help with infrastructure

PLYMOUTH — Among the items included in the Monday night meeting of the Plymouth Common Council was the first reading of an ordinance to amend an existing ordinance concerning the Community Improvement Commission and delineating its responsibilities.
Presenting the proposed revision was City Attorney Nelson Chipman, who said, “This is to clean up and straighten out some of the rules.”
