Bus tour of historic churches of Culver offers warm holiday spirit, concluding concert

November 29, 2011

The Antiquarian & Historical Society of Culver is teaming up with several local churches for a "hands-on" historic tour of several of the community's places of worship, with a holiday-themed Advent/Christmas slant to the event.

On Sunday, Dec. 4, starting at 2 p.m., a bus-driven tour will start outside Wesley United Methodist Church on School Street. Attendees will enter each of several Culver church buildings for a brief look at the architecture of, and talk about the history of, that particular church, primarily led by Jeff Kenney of the AHS.

Culver Academies Head of Schools discuses wind farm proposition

November 28, 2011

Culver Academies, acknowledges Head of Schools John Buxton, has been noticably silent regarding one issue it seems is on nearly everyone's tongues: the proposed placement of a "wind farm" of some 60 wind turbines, each around 500 feet high, in the Fulton and Marshall County areas. Specifically, a number of the towers are likely to be visible from various points along Lake Maxinkuckee, a fact which has led various entities -- including the Lake Maxinkuckee Environmental Council and Culver's parks and recreations board -- to make formal statements against the project.

Celebration of life held for Upsall

November 26, 2011

All week, we've heard about the violence surrounding the death of Wilma Upsall, when someone broke into the Leiters Ford home where she was staying this past Tuesday afternoon and ended her life. Tonight, however, violence and crime had no place. Tonight was a night to remember, to share and to celebrate the life of Wilma Upsall who was so many things to so many people: She was a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother; she was also a sister, aunt, great-aunt and friend.

Lancers win season-opener

November 26, 2011

LAKEVILLE — LaVille head coach Michael Edison didn’t feel he said anything particularly inspiring at his team’s first time out.
The Lancers sure came out of the break like a team on fire, though.
Edison burned his team’s first time out at the 6:04 mark of the second quarter after a 4-0 quarter-opening mini run by visiting Westville cut LaVille’s lead to a single point, 15-14. When play resumed, the Lancers ran out the half on a 22-7 tear to take control of the game for good in an eventual 72-56 season-opening win over the visiting Blackhawks at Dale E. Cox Gymnasium Friday night.
