Plymouth tops Cougars in OT

February 6, 2012

PLYMOUTH — Plymouth fell by the 3 in a disappointing double overtime loss at Goshen Friday, but it was a 3-pointer that gave the Pilgrims new life against New Prairie Saturday.
Ryan McNeil’s buzzer-beating triple from the wing forced overtime, and Plymouth bounced back from its Northern Lakes Conference loss Friday with a 48-45 OT win over visiting New Prairie at The Rock Saturday.
McNeil scored 12 points to pace Plymouth’s scorers, including seven in the final two frames to help lift the Pilgrims to a win over their Sectional 19 adversary.

LaVille nips No. 4 Triton, 48-46

February 6, 2012

BOURBON — LaVille boys basketball head coach Michael Edison said he considers Triton the best team in the Northern State Conference.
For one night, at least, the Lancers staked their claim to that honor.
Bolstered by Andrew Hostetler’s three treys during an 18-6 run to open the game, a capable team defensive performance, and senior forward Justin Baker’s all-around steady game, LaVille, which never trailed, held on for a 48-46 NSC win over Class A No. 4 Triton at the Trojan Trench Saturday.

Legality of park board appointment questioned

February 5, 2012

A Culver town council vote Jan. 17 to leave parks and recreation board member Patty Stallings on that board didn't close the matter. Instead, debate over the matter was very much alive at last week's (Jan. 24) council meeting, and may be decided with finality at the Feb. 8 meeting.

As was the case Jan. 17, the controversy centered on Stallings' party affiliation, since four of the park board's six seats must be evenly split between Democrats or Republicans.

Relay 2012 poised to put Culver over the half-million mark

February 4, 2012

It's hard to believe this April 20 weekend will mark the fifth annual Relay for Life in Culver, but organizers assured community members at a recent kickoff event at the train station-depot, that indeed it is.
Coming off of a total of $138,000 raised for the American Cancer Society at last year's student-led event, that puts Culver on track to top the half-million dollar mark this year (the grand total for the previous four is $490,000).

Banner time at Triton: Trojans down LaVille for share of NSC

February 4, 2012

BOURBON — Triton’s girls basketball team made several goals at the start of the season. Among those, the Lady Trojans set themselves objectives to reach 15 wins and to win a conference championship.
On their last home game of the year Friday, they ticked both off their list.
Class A No. 7 Triton grabbed a 39-35 lead with a 4-0 finish to a 16-8 third quarter, then held off visiting LaVille down the stretch for a 51-47 Senior Night victory that clinched a three-way tie for the Northern State Conference championship along with Bremen and New Prairie.

Pilgrims fall in double OT at Goshen

February 4, 2012

GOSHEN — You live by the three; you die by the three.
If that old basketball saying is correct, the Goshen Redskins must have been living the good life lately.
The Redskins hit nine 3-pointers on the night, the last coming with five seconds left in the second overtime period to escape with a home win over the Plymouth Pilgrims, 58-55.
Goshen junior Sam Stegelmann was the hero for the Redskins, hitting the long distance shot from near the top of the key for the win.
The game wasn’t always as close.
