Acadmies clinic hoped to be a ‘win’ for employees, school alike

The largest employer in Marshall County is now also a health care provider for its many employees, and Culver Academies Human Resources Director Diane Avery couldn’t be happier.

Avery says the genesis of the idea began two years ago, when she read an article about medical practice coming full circle and the rebirth of a popular trend in the 1960s for large organizations to host onsite health clinics for their staff. With today’s rising health care costs, she says, institutions such as the Academies are seeking ways to keep those costs down.

John Ruff split a pair of defenders in the lane for the go-ahead layup with under 4 seconds to go, Mack Mercer altered NorthWood shooter Jonathan Wilkinson’s would-be game changer at the buzzer on the other end, and Plymouth stole a 53-52 Northern Lakes Conference opening win after trailing for more than 27 minutes in a come-from-behind thriller with a championship atmosphere at the Panther Pit Friday night.

Falcons find winning formula at LaVille

LAKEVILLE — John Glenn worked out a little equation Friday night — Defense plus Josh Anderson equals win.
The visiting Falcons held LaVille scoreless from the field during an 11-minute stretch in the second half, and Anderson scored a game-high 20 points and grabbed six rebounds in a 52-39 Northern State Conference boys basketball win between future first-round Bi-County Tournament opponents at Dale E. Cox Gymnasium.

Sudents communicate the meaning of Christmas — in 2 languages

PLYMOUTH - One of the exciting things about Plymouth FOP #195's Shop with a Cop program is the way it brings widely different sections of the community together to help kids have a Christmas they wouldn't have a chance to have otherwise.

Last Saturday was no exception and for a second year Spanish students from Plymouth High School pitched in to do their part. The students volunteered their services to help translate for Spanish speaking families during the shopping trip.

Josh Freyenberger has taken his love of photography and his love of sports and combined them into an exciting start to his career. The 2007 graduate of Plymouth High School has spent the last two years working behind the camera for the NFL Network.

BOURBON — Thelma Janet Hall, 97, of Bourbon passed away Friday, Dec. 9, 2011 at 4:30 p.m. at home in the care of her family and Hospice.
Thelma was born the daughter of Urben Roahrig and Coral Banks Roahrig Nov. 27, 1914 at Bourbon. She was a resident of Bourbon all her life. She was a 1932 graduate of Bourbon High School. She was a homemaker, farmer’s wife and owned Hall’s Western Store of Bourbon for many years. She also worked at GMAC Associates of South Bend.

Gene Curtis, 81, a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend went to be with the Lord peacefully Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2011 at 4:55 a.m. in Hospice House, South Bend. Gene was born Sept. 11, 1930 to Audley and Bessie (Anderson) Curtis. His parents and brother, Audley, Jr. preceded him in death.
