Town considers fluoride-free future

February 16, 2012

BOURBON — Water/wastewater department head Mike Shoda came before the Bourbon Town Council Tuesday with the idea to stop adding fluoride to the town’s public water supply. According to Shoda, fluoride in water may not be actually necessary and taking it out could save the town about $2,000 per year. Shoda also mentioned that he had spoken with the water department head in Walkerton — a town which has already ceased the addition of fluoride to their water — about the issue.
“There’s no law that says we need fluoride in the water,” said Shoda.

Boys swim sectionals open tonight at Warsaw, Riley

February 16, 2012

WARSAW — Culver Academies head coach Major Tom Duckett is mum about making any predictions about a sectional championship.
Two weeks ago his girls swim team surprised him with the program’s first-ever team championship, and that’s just what the boys are hoping to do as they enter tonight’s Warsaw Sectional prelims on the heels of an undefeated dual meet season.
Plymouth joins the 13-team Warsaw field tonight at 5:30 p.m. with the finals and consols set for the top eight and 16, respectively, Saturday morning, while Bremen enters the 10-team South Bend Riley Sectional field.

Four area wrestlers prepping for Friday’s state finals

February 16, 2012

INDIANAPOLIS — Last year, Abraham Hall’s fourth-place finish at semistate earned him a tough draw heading into the state wrestling finals, and he missed the cut from Friday’s opening round to the second day of the tourney Saturday.
The Bremen senior’s heavyweight championship at Merrillville last Saturday gave him a more favorable draw this time around, and he’s hoping to capitalize with a top finish as the 74th Annual IHSAA Individual State Wrestling Finals get underway Friday at 6 p.m. with the quarterfinals set to begin Saturday at 9:30 at Conseco Fieldhouse.
