LAKEVILLE â Clarice Opal Balmer, 82, residing in Lakeville, passed away at 3:37 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 24, 2010 in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Plymouth.
She was born March 24, 1928 in Lakeville, to Lawrence P. and Mary Catherine (Loucks) Rouch. June 30, 1947 in Lakeville, she married Perry W. Balmer, who preceded her in death July 26, 1991.

GROVERTOWN â E. Joan Brown, 81, died Monday, Oct. 25, 2010 at her residence.Â
She is survived by her daughters, Laura Brown of Chesterton and Linda Brown of Plymouth; sons: John Brown of Plymouth, David Brown of Pittsboro, Ind. and Aaron Brown of Grovertown; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and sisters, Louise Hobbs of Salem, Ind. and Linda Johns of Indianapolis.Â
Visitation will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. ET Thursday, Oct. 28 at Rannells Funeral Home, Koontz Lake Chapel.

Thistleberry Farms in South Bend sees a lot of visitors at its corn maze this time of year. Heading there from Plymouth recently were Ashley Harrell, Carson Pifer, Haley Harrell, Mary Elizabeth Beatty, Elijah Nixon, Drew Harrell, and Kyle Johnson.
LAPAZ (HSPA) â One candidate is studying finance in college. The other learned budgeting during the Great Depression.
Elma Konya, an 89-year-old who has been North Township trustee for 39 years, is challenged by 20-year-old college junior Chelsea Roose.
So what makes Roose, majoring in banking and finance at Indiana University South Bend, think she can oust such a tenured incumbent?
With towns in the news for electing 18- and 19-year-old mayors, Roose figured sheâd have an equal shot at trustee.
Two candidates face incumbent Nancy Dembowski for State Representative (D-17) in next Tuesdayâs Election: Francis Ellert and Richard Liedtky.
House District 17 includes Starke County as well as portions of Marshall and LaPorte Counties. Communities located within the district include: Culver, Kingsford Heights, Knox, North Judson and Plymouth.

BREMEN â Thelma C. Miller, 100, of Bremen, passed away Thursday, Oct. 21, 2010 at the Bremen Health Care Center.Â
She was born Dec. 27, 1909 in New Albany, Ind. to John and Mae (Carnihan) Shelton. In 1932 she married James B. Miller; he preceded her in death in 2001.
Thelma was involved in Bremen Current Events Club and local state Republican committees. She was also active in her church, playing piano for Sunday School at the Bremen First United Church of Christ. She enjoyed playing golf, bowling, pitching horseshoes and dancing.

GROVERTOWN â Carolyn J. Owens, 66, died Saturday, Oct. 23, 2010 at her residence.Â
She is survived by her husband Bobby; a son, Chris (Angie) Owens of Grovertown; brother, George âTimerâ Milner Jr. of Hamlet; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.Â
Visitation will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. (Central Time) Tuesday, Oct. 26 and one hour prior to services Wednesday, at Rannells Funeral Home, Hamlet Chapel.
Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27 at the funeral chapel.
Burial will follow at Fletcher Cemetery.Â
PLYMOUTH â Although the concept of Money Smart Week is new to Marshall County, United Way Executive Director Jennifer Maddox was pleased that several local businesses volunteered to be a part of the events of the week, sponsored by the United Way.
During the Saturday portion of the fair, Maddox said, âThe response from professionals has been outstanding.â
PLYMOUTH â The Plymouth High School marching band âPride of Plymouth â made Plymouth High School history Saturday evening by becoming the first-ever marching band from Plymouth to qualify for the Indiana State School Music Associationâs Marching Band state finals.
The band is under the direction of Bryan Ames and Lisa Wallyn.  Guard director is Nikki Horner.  Drum majors for the band are Tori MacLain, Elizabeth Wolford, Addie Palmer and Stephen John-son.
A week after breaking the Culver Girls Academy Regional record, CGAâs Waverly Neer clocked a 17:53.9, breaking the New Prairie Semistate record to win the semistate race and lead her team to a fifth-place finish, which qualified the Lady Eagles for the state finals for the sixth time in seven years.
