PLYMOUTH ‚ÄĒ The Plymouth Park Department is partnering with resident Jane Blank to collect clothing and shoe donations until Jan. 23. Donations of gently used women's, men's and children's clothing and shoes can be dropped off at the park office until Jan. 23.
Blank decided to organize a community clothing drive around Thanksgiving.
"I just thought that there is so much waste (of used clothes)," said Blank, explaining that although clothes are often donated to Goodwill and other similar organizations, "some people can't afford the five dollars or whatever it is to buy from Goodwill."
Starke County is grieving the loss of one of their own. U.S. Army SPC Robert (Bobby) Tauteris Jr., 44, of Hamlet, died a hero‚Äôs death while defending his country in Afghanistan last Friday morning. Tauteris, along with three other soldiers, lost his life when their vehicle hit an IED (roadside bomb). A fourth soldier was injured.
SPC Brian Leonhardt, 21, of the Merrillville area, was one of the four soldiers lost. Leonhardt also has family and friends in Starke County who are heartbroken over the loss of this young hero.

OSCEOLA ‚ÄĒ Loneda M. ‚ÄúGranny‚ÄĚ Robinson, 92, of Osceola, passed away Monday, Jan. 9, 2012 at St. Joseph‚Äôs Regional Medical Center in Mishawaka. Loneda was born Feb. 14, 1919 in Marshall County to the late Henry and Amelia (Birk) Hummel. In September of 1937, she married Marion C. Robinson. He preceded her in death, passing away June 16, 1956.

BREMEN ‚ÄĒ¬†Marvin Lee Weldy, 75, 222 E. Bike St., Bremen, died Friday, Jan. 6, 2012, at 4:37 p.m. at his residence from natural causes.
PLYMOUTH ‚ÄĒ Plymouth‚Äôs defense held LaPorte to its second-lowest production of the season, but the Lady Pilgrims‚Äô offensive woes proved insurmountable Tuesday.
The Pilgrims finished just 8 of 36 (22 percent) from the field ‚ÄĒ including a 1-of-8 mark in the second quarter ‚ÄĒ and converted on only 8 of 17 (47 percent) from the line in their second straight loss, a 31-25 defeat at the hands of the visiting Slicers at The Rock.
Vikings slay Dragons
Tippecanoe Valley‚Äôs Tanner Andrews scored a game-high 22 to power the Vikings to a 51-39 defeat of the host Dragons at Argos Tuesday.
Cain Thorne put up 11 points to lead Argos, while Dominic Cataldo finished with eight points and five steals.
Argos hosts Oregon-Davis Friday at 8 p.m.

PLYMOUTH ‚ÄĒ County maintenance director Rich Ulrich spoke to county council members Monday about the two county building elevators, which are again out of commission.
"This is our worst-case scenario," said Ulrich, calling the elevators "obsolete" and noting that the 30-year-old machines have never been updated with new technology.

While Hayn called each name, Irvan put down his Sharpie and clapped along with the crowd before returning to his stack. Behind Irvan, Plymouth Speedway owner Ed Kennedy enjoyed the evening with promoter Eric Saunders and his friends and family.

Fresh off its winning turn at the Northern State Conference meet Saturday, Bremen‚Äôs girls swim team beat NorthWood 95-85 in a dual meet at NorthWood Monday.
Katie Lafferty won the 50 and 100 free races, swam the opening leg on Bremen‚Äôs winning 200 medley relay team and the anchor on the Lady Lions‚Äô winning 400 free relay squad, while Amy Fanning swam the anchor for Bremen‚Äôs medley relay team and opened for the team‚Äôs winning 400 free relay squad and won the 200 IM and 500 free races.
