Comfort Inn work to end by festival

PLYMOUTH — Construction could begin once more on the Comfort Inn on Michigan Street in Plymouth. For more than two years, a sign in front of the structure said the hotel would be opened in 2010. However, since 2010 has come and gone, Mayor Mark Senter added the project to his list of what he terms “eyesores” in the community that he hopes to see improved.
Senter recently published the list as a part of his “Operation Bright Spot” project and, as anticipated, has now been getting responses from owners.

Lady Pilgrims coach Cox retires

PLYMOUTH — After more than 20 years and a dozen championships, Plymouth High School girls basketball coach Dave Cox is retiring, the school announced Wednesday.
Cox leaves the program as the school’s all-time winningest hoops coach with 308 victories to his credit.

McNeil, Mercer are All-NLC for Plymouth

PLYMOUTH — Plymouth senior guard Ryan McNeil and sophomore center Mack Mercer have been named to the 2011-12 All-Northern Lakes Conference boys basketball team, while senior forward John Ruff was given All-NLC Honorable Mention.

UPDATE: Coroner says man drowned after truck slid into water-filled ditch last week

BOURBON — Marshall County coroner Bill Clevenger said Wednesday that alcohol and drugs were not a factor in last Thursday's early morning crash that killed Louis J. Cady, 75, of Nappanee. Preliminary autopsy reports indicate that Cady drowned when his truck landed upside down in a water-filled ditch on Beech Road.
When found, Cady was wearing his seatbelt. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Clevenger.

ARGOS — Elizabeth “Betty” Anne Castleman, 81, of 17068 Oak Road, Argos, died Feb. 19, 2012 at 3:05 a.m. at Miller’s Merry Manor – Culver following a lengthy illness.
She was born Aug. 3, 1930 in Argos to Frank Orange Cowen and Hallie Belle Lowry. She lived all of her life in the Argos community.
Aug. 28, 1949 she married Rex P. Castleman at Poplar Grove United Methodist Church, Culver.
She worked as a switchboard operator for the Argos Telephone Company, then went to work at the State Exchange Bank in Culver for 21 years.

PLYMOUTH — Jean L. Langdon, 81, a lifetime Plymouth resident, passed away Friday evening, Feb. 17, 2012 in the Greencroft Healthcare facility in Goshen.
Born in Plymouth Feb. 3, 1931, Jean was the daughter of Clarence and Ruth (Beyler) Beals.
Jean will be remembered by her smile and unwavering love for her family.
She had a long, wonderful life, well-lived. She knew, and her family knows, that she is whole again and with Jesus in paradise.

BOURBON — Herbert G. Baker, 86, of Bourbon, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, Feb. 19, 2012 at 9:44 p.m. at home of natural causes.

Pilgrims ‘reserve’ a win at Glenn

WALKERTON — Plymouth’s reserves have been a team strength all season long.
On Tuesday, they were the difference.
Plymouth went seven deep off the bench, the Pilgrim reserves put up 38 points with two players in double figures, and the visitors wore down John Glenn in the second half for a 74-60 regular-season-closing victory over their Sectional 19 foes on the road at The Aerie.

LaVille beats OD
Oregon-Davis closed its regular season with a 69-37 loss to visiting LaVille Tuesday.
Andrew Hostetler put up a game-high 20 points in the win, while Nick Amor had 13, Jordyn Williams and Justin Baker each finished with 10, and Cameron Gurtner recorded nine points for balanced LaVille.
OD was led by seven points each from Craig McIntosh and Nolan Coffin as the Bobcats were held to a combined eight points in the second and third quarters.
OD closes the regular season at 4-15 and will open Sectional 51 play at Triton against the host Trojans next Tuesday.

3 injured in crash at Oak, Jefferson

PLYMOUTH — Lorraine Hoke of Plymouth, was uninjured when the car she was driving was involved in a crash with Phillip Boyd, of Marion, Tuesday around 11:15 a.m. at Oak Road and Jefferson Street in Plymouth.
Reports Plymouth Police Officer Mark Owen, Boyd had three passengers that were injured, but none appeared to be life-threatening.
