BREMEN — Bremen senior forward Jenna Pfeiffer as the girls District I Indiana Basketball Coaches Association/ Pacers-Fever Player of the Week for her performances during a pair of Lady Lions wins over Wawasee and Jimtown last week.

Argos' Cohagan, Ewing advance at regional
The Argos girls bowling team competed in the Michigan City Regional on Saturday.
The team finished in 10th place with a score of 2,034.
Competing for the girls were Brittani Brown, Liz Hack, Jina Ewing, Abby Cohagan, Jamie Ewing, and Chelsea Bradley.
Jamie Ewing and Cohagan will advance in singles play to the Fort Wayne Semistate this Saturday at Pro Bowl West. Ewing shot a 524 to finish 10th and advance out of regional, while Cohagan shot a 498 to advance in 15th place.

NY Times columnist, author Cohen to speak in Culver

CULVER, Ind. – The New York Times columnist Roger Cohen will speak at Culver Academies at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 7. Cohen is the first speaker in the Global Studies Institute’s “Global Ideas” series. His talk will be “Writing about the World.”

Cohen joined The Times in 1990 as a foreign correspondent before becoming acting foreign editor on Sept. 11, 2001. He became foreign editor six months later. Since 2004, Cohen has written a column for the International Herald Tribune, which is owned by The Times. In 2009, he was named a columnist for The New York Times.

Unemployment rate steadily declining in county

PLYMOUTH — “Slow and steady wins the race” may be the phrase that describes how Marshall County is recovering from recession.
According to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, Marshall County’s unemployment rate declined in 2011 to 9.4 percent from 10.7 percent in 2010. This compares to an unemployment rate of 10.7 percent in Starke County and 9.6 percent in St. Joseph County. Although the improvement is small, it’s a start — and nothing to be sneezed at, according to Marshall County Economic Development Center (MCEDC) director Jennifer Laurent.

Bremen’s Abe Hall delivers message at wrestling regional

ROCHESTER — Coming into Saturday’s Rochester Wrestling Regional with a No. 2 state ranking, Abraham Hall was on a mission to prove himself.
The Bremen senior delivered a message that he was up to his Indianamat.com rating, earning a heavyweight championship with a 2-0 victory over Penn’s Kade Maggert.
“After getting fourth the last two years and not really wrestling well, I wanted to make a statement that I deserved my ranking at number two,” said Hall. “I felt like I actually needed to prove something, that I was as good as people believe me to be.”

Plymouth tops Cougars in OT

PLYMOUTH — Plymouth fell by the 3 in a disappointing double overtime loss at Goshen Friday, but it was a 3-pointer that gave the Pilgrims new life against New Prairie Saturday.
Ryan McNeil’s buzzer-beating triple from the wing forced overtime, and Plymouth bounced back from its Northern Lakes Conference loss Friday with a 48-45 OT win over visiting New Prairie at The Rock Saturday.
McNeil scored 12 points to pace Plymouth’s scorers, including seven in the final two frames to help lift the Pilgrims to a win over their Sectional 19 adversary.

LaVille nips No. 4 Triton, 48-46

BOURBON — LaVille boys basketball head coach Michael Edison said he considers Triton the best team in the Northern State Conference.
For one night, at least, the Lancers staked their claim to that honor.
Bolstered by Andrew Hostetler’s three treys during an 18-6 run to open the game, a capable team defensive performance, and senior forward Justin Baker’s all-around steady game, LaVille, which never trailed, held on for a 48-46 NSC win over Class A No. 4 Triton at the Trojan Trench Saturday.

CGA wins Warsaw Sectional
Culver Girls Academy won six events en route to the championship at the Warsaw Girls Swim Sectional Saturday.
The Lady Eagles put up 430 points to beat out host Warsaw by a convincing 430-375 margin, while Plymouth placed seventh with 163 points at the meet.
Lauryn Robinson led CGA with four state-qualifying swims as she won 50 and 100 freestyles and advanced in the 200 medley and 400 free relays with Eberle Miller, Rory Byrne and Jaclyn Schutjer.
