PLYMOUTH â The Ply-mouth High School Speech and Debate Team had a busy and fruitful December in terms of competition as a team and in individual performances.
On Dec. 5, two-thirds of the team traveled to Peoria, Ill. to compete in the George Armstrong Invitational at Bradley University. Overall, the team placed fifth, competing against teams from all over the United States.
Earning individual honors were Bryt Hiatt, placing third in total sweepstakes points; and Austin Craft, fourth.

HAMLET â Ruth L. Awald, 83, of Lafayette, formerly of Hamlet, died Friday, Dec. 17, 2010 in St. Elizabethâs Hospital, Lafayette.Â
She is survived by daughters, Mary Lou (Gregg) Kempski of Chicago and Norma (Darrell) Pitts of Hamlet; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one brother, Russell Bradley of Monroeville, Pa.
Visitation will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. (CT) Wednesday, Dec. 22 at Rannells Funeral Home, Hamlet Chapel.
Funeral services will take place at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral chapel.

PLYMOUTH â Barbara A. Arnold, 73, of Plymouth, died at 7:10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2010, at her residence.Â
She is survived by her brothers, Robert Huffer of Plymouth and Ronald (Joannie) Huffer of Cocoa, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.
There will be no visitation or funeral at this time.Â
Burial will take place at a later date.   Â
Van Gilder Funeral Home, 300 W. Madison St., Plymouth, assisted the family with the arrangements.

Embracing winter and the fun that goes with it, the Pilot News is giving readers the chance to send in photos of their best snow creations. PLYMOUTH â Webster second grade teachers challenged and their classes responded with an outpouring of inventiveness.
Teachers Kari Osborn, Jodi Eveland  and Crystal Uyhelji had their students read a story about a pair of creative young inventors.
âThe story was called âPearl and Wagner,ââ said Eveland. âIt was about a science fair and they made a trash eating robot. In the end of the story they didnât win the science fair but the story was about friendship and team work.â
ARGOS â Five students from the Adult Basic Education (ABE) welding classes took what could be the most important test of their lives Thursday.
They have been working for the past 15 weeks to learn and perfect welding techniques in order to obtain a MIG welding certification.
According to ABE Director Deb Sherwood, the five young students had all dropped out of high school for various reasons.
âOne came to us with a GED and the others have been taking GED classes along with the welding classes,â Sherwood said.

PLYMOUTH â Plymouth point guard Houston Hodges played his best game of the season, but NorthWood won the game in the front court.
With 6-foot-8 leading scorer Sean Smith sidelined with a five-game suspension, Panthers big men Cameron Williams and Aaron Rhoade combined for 27 points, and NorthWood earned a 19-rebound advantage keeping Plymouth off the glass as the Panthers handed the Pilgrims a 47-38 Northern Lakes Conference-opening loss at The Rock Friday.
WALKERTON â John Glennâs boys basketball squad flexed its muscle on both ends of the court Friday.
Defensively, the Falcons held LaVille to a 10-of-42 mark from the field â 2 of 18 from downtown â while on the other side of the timeline Glenn pounded the ball inside almost at will in a 55-32 Northern State Conference win at The Aerie.
âI think our strength took over tonight, and it should with our size and experience,â Glenn head coach Travis Hannah said. âWe were able to take the ball to the hole.
BREMEN â The hosts managed a spilt in Friday nightâs girls/boys doubleheader with Knox, as Bremenâs girls blew out the visiting Redskins 65-47 and the boys fell 44-26.
In the girls contest, Bremenâs Brittney Pittman had 26 points while going 8-of-11 from 3-point range. Lerin Studt (13 points) and Jenna Pfeiffer (11) also scored in double figures while Kailee Feldman finished with 9 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
In the boys contest, Bremen had more fouls (16) than points (14) through three quarters and got no closer than 10 points after the first 5:29.
CULVER â If Jimtown is a brick wall, then Culverâs Zoe Bauer was the bulldozer that broke through it.
The Cavaliers, led by Bauer, came from behind in the last minutes of the game to increase their Northern State Conference wins to two, with a W over the Jimmies, 41-33.
Jimtown came to Culver knowing they had to shut down the Cavsâ four-year varsity player. And for the first three quarters, they did just that.
âI think we did a great job on Bauer,â Jimtown head coach Randy DeShone said, âuntil the third quarter. Heâs been around a while, and a kid like that is going to beat you.â
