PLYMOUTH — Cecil Dean Martin, 81, of 4B Road, Plymouth, passed away Tuesday, March 13, 2012, at 10:45 a.m., in his home surrounded by his family.

5 Sharks advance to state championships

PLYMOUTH — Five Plymouth Aquatics Club Sharks earned top spots at the Indiana Northwest Divisional Championship recently at Crown Point High School to claim berths to the Indiana Age Group State Championship meet this weekend in Indianapolis.
Will Serf, a veteran of championship meets, returns to swim the 100 and 200 backstroke and the 200 butterfly. He will also celebrate his 14th birthday on Saturday.
“I believe this is the second time Will and I have celebrated his birthday together on the Natatorium pool deck,” said Sharks head coach Leanne Senter.

Glenn grad Pletcher pursues Boston Marathon

WALKERTON — Kyle Pletcher, a 2006 John Glenn grad, spends his days as an accountant with Cardno JFNew in Walkerton. But by night — and in any other time he can find — Pletcher is a runner. Whether it’s on the treadmill at LifePlex in Plymouth, or outside near his home, Pletcher spends about two hours running every day.
Right now, he’s working toward an ambitious goal –the Boston Marathon, one of the most well known racing events in the world. The race attracts hundreds of thousands of spectators and thousands of participants each year.

National Players’ ‘Of Mice and Men’ onstage in Culver Thursday

This Thursday, March 15, Culver Academies’ Eppley Auditorium will host the National Players’ stage rendition of the John Steinbeck classic, “Of Mice and Men,” starting at 7:30 p.m.

“Now celebrating its 63rd anniversary season,” notes the Players’ website (, “National Players has earned a distinctive place in American theatre by...(introducing) audiences to great works of dramatic literature that are rich in exciting stories and characters, and profound in language and themes.

Event planned for School of Inquiry students, parents

PLYMOUTH — The School of Inquiry will host a welcome ice cream social for all students who have enrolled in the school and their parents Thursday at 6:30 p.m. The ice cream social will be held in the Plymouth High School cafeteria. In addition to having ice cream and having time to meet and socialize with other students and their parents, the event will give parents an opportunity to meet the staff for next year, see a model of the future school space, and hear about how parents can partner with the school.

Public information meeting scheduled at OD

HAMLET — OD-EDPAC (Oregon-Davis Educational Political Action Committee) will be holding a public information meeting at OD High School gymnasium March 20 at 6 p.m. The purpose of the meeting is to explain the tax levy that was recently proposed to Starke County Commissioners.
The funding problem for OD began with the recent changes at the state level on how school funding is calculated.
Oregon-Davis School Corporation Superintendent Steven Disney explained their current financial situation to the county commissioners at their recent meeting.

Spots still open for 5K race Saturday

PLYMOUTH — There are still spots available for the St. Paddy’s DAY Dash Saturday, a 5K race intended to raise money for Plymouth High School graduate Eric Day’s medical expenses. Day, who will be a sophomore at Butler University this fall, recently finished undergoing treatment for a brain tumor.
Kelsey Flynn, an organizer of the event and a friend of the Day family, said that she and others were looking for a way to help the family when they thought of doing a St. Patrick’s day race.

NAPPANEE — Cheryl A. Gonzalez, 57, of 500 Short St., Nappanee, died at 8:05 p.m., Friday, March 9, 2012 at her residence after a long illness.
She is survived by her husband, Daniel V. Gonzalez; sons, Don C. Gonzalez of Lakeville, Mark A. Gonzalez of Richmond, Va., James P. Gonzalez of Nappanee; three grandchildren; and sisters, Susan (Glen) Hochstetler of Nappanee, Cindy (Joe) Lynn of Bremen, and Mary Robbins of Wakarusa.
