BREMEN — Dale Schoner, 95, died Sunday, May 6, 2012.
He is survived by his wife, Virgina; five children, Dalthea (Corky) Coughlin, Jackie Wilson, Richard (Debbie) Schoner, Donna (Earl) Minnich and Cherylee Schoner and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In lieu of visitation there will be a memorial service held at the chapel in the Bremen Cemetery, Bremen, Friday, May 11, 2012 at 10 a.m.
Memorial contributions may be given to Adventist St. Thomas Hospice of Hinsdale, Ill.

PORTER — Russell Warren Larson (Osowski), 93, of Porter passed away Sunday, May 6, 2012 at his home. He was born Dec. 15, 1918 in Gary to Harry and Edith Asplund Larson, both of whom preceded him in death.

ROCHESTER — Mrs. Joan  Smiley, 86, of Rochester, entered into the arms of her Lord and Savior at 9:08 p.m., Saturday, May 5, 2012, after her son recited the 23rd Psalm and while her family sang Amazing Grace. Her death was due to tetanus, following an accident while preparing to garden, which was something she loved  to do. She died at the St. Joseph Regional Medical Center of Mishawaka.

Culver parks board fields concerns over pier installation, accounting system

Last Tuesday’s Culver Parks and Recreation board meeting included a nearly 90 minute public input section. The 15-person audience voiced concerns about the safety and stability of the recently installed pier, the possibility of switching to a more modern accounting system, and the practicality of adding a bathroom to the historic railroad pavilion on the west end of the park.

Tim Yuhas and his father Thomas questioned the board about way the park pier had been installed.

IHSAA announces state softball tourney draws

The IHSAA announced the draws for the 28th Annual State Softball Tournament Thursday.
In Class 3A action, Plymouth will take on John Glenn in Game 2 of the St. Joseph’s Sectional, while Culver Girls Academy drew the bye and will play the winner of the Game 1 match-up between No. 1-ranked Mishawaka Marian and the host Lady Indians.
In the Class 2A tourney, North Judson will play Winamac in the second game at Sectional 34 at Winamac, while LaVille will play Bremen in Game 1 at the Westview Sectional.

NLC tourney opens
Plymouth kicked off the Northern Lakes Conference Girls Tennis Tournament Wednesday at Concord, winning at three positions.
Allie Berger recovered from a first-set loss to win in three sets at No. 2 Singles for the Pilgrims. In doubles action, Plymouth’s top tandem of Marissa German and Andria Shook swept to victory in straight sets, and Emily Blake and Mikayla German won in three sets at No. 2 Doubles.

Glenn’s Dreessen honored with Indiana Football Hall of Fame’s 3A scholarship

RICHMOND — The Board of Directors of the Indiana Football Hall of Fame has announce Charlie Dreessen of John Glenn High School as the 2012 winner of the class 3A scholarship. 
Dreessen will attend Trine University to study mechanical engineering and play football.
Dreessen is the son of Charman and Steve Dreessen of Walkerton. He was nominated for the honor by John Glenn football coach Justin Bogunia and principal William Morton. Dreessen is ranked fourth in his class with a cumulative GPA of 4.011 and has accrued numerous academic honors.

Bremen defends Northern State title
Jenna Pfeiffer’s dominating victories in four events lifted Bremen to a convincing team win in Wednesday’s Northern State Conference girls track and field championships.
Pfeiffer, a senior, easily won the 100-meter hurdles (16.78 seconds), the 300 hurdles (47.25), high jump (5-4) and anchored the first-place 1600 relay. The Lady Lions also won both the 400 and 1600 relay races at the meet, and Bremen defended its title with 150 points ahead of runner-up New Prairie’s 117 2/3.

PHS Distinguished Alumni named

PLYMOUTH —Final voting is complete and the Plymouth Alumni Association will induct three new members into the Plymouth Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame at the annual Alumni Banquet on June 15.
This year for the first time the Hall will welcome three inductees - from the class of 1945 Dr. Arthur Becknell Jr., from the class of 1949 Dr. Robert Vore, and from the class of 1959 Suellen Glaub-Long.

Seniors with good grades could win car

PLYMOUTH — County Auto Center in Plymouth is giving area seniors a chance to win a free car, simply by bringing in their report card.
"For every A — it doesn't matter if they have one or 30 — they will get an entry," said Joe Martin, Jr. of County Auto. "We are trying to encourage (students) to do well in their classrooms and get As."
