WARSAW — With no one challenging David DeVries at sectional, Culver Military Academy head coach Tom Duckett issued a special challenge to his star swimmer at the Warsaw Boys Swim Sectional Saturday: Lap the field.
The trick worked, giving DeVries a little extra impetus in the 500-yard freestyle as he followed up a school record-breaking 1:45.93 for a 200 free sectional title with a CMA record-breaking and sectional championship 4:46.54 in the 500.

CULVER — The Lady Cavaliers earned their first ever regional basketball championship as they came from behind to beat Fairfield 37-33 after trailing by as many as six points in the fourth quarter at home on Saturday night.

DONALDSON — Beginning Experience (B.E.) Weekend Retreat for Widowed, Divorced or Separated Persons will be held at the Lindenwood Retreat Center, Donaldson, from 7 p.m. Friday, March 4 to 3 p.. Sunday, March 6. The Christian-based retreat helps grieving, single-again persons to emerge from the darkness of grief, depression, anger or loss to move toward the future with renewed hope. PLYMOUTH — Dr. Mark Allen, pastor of Sunrise Chapel, is hosting a series of “Discussions on Heaven” based on the book, "Heaven is for Real," by Todd Burpo. The first discussion will be Sunday, Feb. 27, at 9:30 a.m. at Sunrise Chapel.
The book contains a story of a 4-year-old’s trip to heaven and back. Descriptions are given of meeting long departed relatives, Jesus and angels, and how “really, really big” God is. Having it all backed by scripture will forever change the way you think of eternity. According to the book, heaven is a place where “Nobody is old and nobody wears glasses.”
KNOX — Todd Boldry was expecting a close game.
The Knox head basketball coach wasn’t disappointed in that regard, and he wasn’t disappointed in the outcome either, as his team took the lead for good on a pair of Patrick Ambrose free throws with 3:12 to go and held off Plymouth in the final minutes for a 40-38 Senior Night victory at Knox Friday.
ARGOS — John Glenn’s Jordan Hesters found his long-range groove Friday.
With the Falcons struggling from the perimeter against Argos’ 2-3 zone, the 5-foot-11 senior guard stepped up and rained down a trio of second-half treys during a 5-minute span as the Falcons pulled away for a 60-42 boys basketball win at Phil Weybright Gymnasium.
BREMEN — Following Friday night’s 68-31 victory over Bremen, NorthWood coach Aaron Wolfe paid his team the ultimate compliment.
“I was proud of our guys and I think that’s the best performance they’ve had in the last two years,” Wolfe said. “I thought they showed a lot of poise because Bremen came out and played really well in the first quarter.”
A team that has struggled with bad starts much of the season, Bremen (3-15) jumped out to a quick four point lead. NorthWood (13-5) responded with 21 straight points to blow the game wide open.
INDIANAPOLIS — Plymouth’s Damon Howe and Culver Community’s Jeremiah Harvey made heavyweight statements Friday on the first night of the IHSAA individual state wrestling finals.
Each pinned his first-round opponent in less than 30 seconds as the 73rd annual tournament opened at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
Harvey, a senior, pinned Huntington North’s Andrew Mason in 24 seconds. Howe, also a senior, stuck Fort Wayne North Side’s Ta’quan Walker in 0:29.

The Bremen Police Department is used to trading in its used vehicles for new ones, which it will soon do with two within its six-vehicle fleet. However, it isn't accustomed to the simultaneous staff turnover it currently faces.
Dispatcher Laverne Replogle retired Feb. 17 after 17 years between the BPD and the Marshall County Sheriff's Department 911 center. Barb Capron, the department's dispatch supervisor, will retire Feb. 28 after 28 years of service.
Capron's position will be filled in-house by Melinda Daily, a radio operator of 23 years who will move from Class B to Class A.
WARSAW — The host Tigers put themselves in position to win their third straight sectional championships with a dominant 21 top-six berths, while Culver Military Academy earned 12 top-six spots and Plymouth grabbed four at the preliminary round of the 11-team Warsaw Boys Swim Sectional Thursday.
“As far as times, with the exception of one swim the boys all swam lifetime bests,” said Culver Military head boys swim coach Tom Duckett.
