BREMEN — Charlene K. Hampe, 83, of Bremen, passed away Monday, July 2, 2012 at the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center of Mishawaka. She was born in Chicago, Ill. to Frederick and Mary (Saar) Kestner Jan. 17, 1929. She married George A. Hampe Feb. 25, 1950.
Charlene enjoyed taking care of her family as a homemaker. She loved to see her three great-granddaughters, Taylor, Ella and Georgia, as often as possible. They were her pride and joy. She was also a member of the First United Church of Christ.

Ring found on D-Day beach is mysterious legacy of unknown Culver soldier

The Culver Academies Museum & Gift Shop, at 102 S. Main Street in downtown Culver, has recently become home to a unique and fascinating historical mystery.

The museum was contacted earlier this year by John Carr Pierce, who described -- and offered to send to the museum -- a Culver Black Horse Troop ring found on the beaches of Normandy on June 7, 1944, the day after the D-Day invasion.

Post 27 splits day 1 of Patriot Tourney

PLYMOUTH — Plymouth Post 27 opened its second annual Patriot Classic baseball tournament with a split Thursday, battling back to beat South Bend 7-6 before a reversal of fortune in game two, as the Diamond Spyders fell in a 7-5 comeback by Crown Point in the nightcap at Bill Nixon Field.

Things looked grim in the beginning for the Diamond Spyders as Post 50 picked up six runs in the first inning off starting pitcher Sean Liedtky to take the early lead.

Excessive heat warning prompts the opening of cooling centers in Plymouth, Bremen, and Culver

MARSHALL COUNTY — An Excessive Heat Warning remains in effect for all of Marshall County through Saturday. Temperatures are expected to exceed 100 degrees today and may exceed 105 degrees in some locations Friday. A combination of heat and humidity will push afternoon heat index values into the 105 to 115 degree range.

Run Morgan Run benefit 5k

PLYMOUTH — There will be a “Run Morgan Run” 5K run/ walk Saturday, July 14 at 8 a.m. in the Plymouth High School parking lot at the entrance to the track.
Suggested donation to join the event is $25 with all proceeds going to offset the cost of Morgan Uceny’s family’s expenses as they travel to the 2012 Olympics to watch her compete in the women’s 1500-meter run.
The 5k will also feature competitions on the Plymouth track racing against Uceny’s Olympic Trials-winning time, plus a banner to sign sending her congratulations and good luck wishes.

NAPPANEE — Chester F Mast, 81, of Nappanee, died Tuesday, July 3, at 12:05 a.m. at his residence from a long illness.
He is survived by a daughter, Patty Britt of Nappanee; son, Chester Allen (Ginger) Mast of Bremen; six grandchildren; brothers, Elmer Mast of Mishawaka, Ervin (Lois) Mast of Berne, and sisters, Laura Lawson of Niles, Mich., and Verna Newton of Elkhart.
Visitation is Friday, July 6, at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home in Nappanee from 5 to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to the 2 p.m. service Saturday, also at the funeral home.
