Poker tourney to benefit fundraiser

PLYMOUTH — Rick Cooper, Jr., the Plymouth resident who won $2 million from a scratch-off lottery ticket in January, is combining his love of poker and his new-found riches in order to give back to his community.
Cooper is hosting a poker tournament at the Plymouth Eagles Club Saturday, and part of the proceeds will go toward the Eagles’ fund to purchase a critical care transport for Riley Hospital for Children.

WATERVLIET, Mich. — Elaine Sandra McVicker, age 56 years of Summit Drive, Watervliet, Mich. died at 3:10 p.m. Easter Sunday, April 8, 2012 at Watervliet Community Hospital unexpectedly but of natural causes.
She was born Dec. 14, 1955 in Knox to Dewey Otto and Pauline Veronica (Nauseda) McVicker. She attended school in Leiter’s Ford and has lived in Watervliet, Mich. for many years.

BREMEN — Fern Iris Yoder, 93, of 1683 Plymouth-Goshen Trail, Bremen, died at 9:25 p.m., Monday, April 9, 2012 at Bremen Community Hospital.
Surviving are sons, Roland (Rita) Yoder, Howard (Laurie) Yoder, and James (Sandra) Yoder, all of Bremen; a daughter, Marilyn (Dennis) Easton, Osceola; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers, Charles (Edna) Goss Jr., Matuhn, Ill., Melvin (Janice) Goss, Nappanee; and sisters, Naomi (Wayne) Weldy, Winona Lake, and Pearl (Carlyle) Chupp, Nappanee.

Wild pitching costly for Lions as Pilgrims rally past Bremen, 4-3

PLYMOUTH — Bremen head coach Bo Hundt knew coming into the season that his team’s fortunes were going to hinge on pitching.
It was certainly the Lions’ undoing Wednesday.
Bremen’s pitching staff struggled with control issues in the blustery conditions, and Plymouth capitalized on a total of 11 walks and five wild pitches — including four bases on balls and a pair of wild pitches during a decisive three-run sixth — as the Pilgrims claimed their second straight win with a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over the visiting Lions at Bill Nixon Field.

Skirvin signs with U of Indy

Plymouth High School senior Hayden Skirvin recently signed a letter of intent to play football next fall at the University of Indianapolis. The coaching staff at the University of Indianapolis heavily recruited Hayden to play tight end for the Division II Greyhounds, who finished the 2011 season with a record of 7-4.

Bremen beat visiting John Glenn on all five courts in a Northern State Conference sweep at Leeper Park Wednesday.
Glenn freshman Kyler Columbia took a 6-4 win over Bremen’s Chelsea Anglin in the second set before succumbing 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 in No. 2 singles play in the closest match of the day.

Triton announces 2012-13 school calendar

BOURBON — The Triton school board announced its 2012-13 school year calendar at its monthly meeting last Monday. According to the calendar, the school year will begin Aug. 14 and conclude May 23.
Early dismissals are planned for every Friday. Elementary dismissal will take place at 2:35 p.m. and high school dismissal at 2:45 p.m.
Winter vacation begins Dec. 24 and classes resume Jan. 7.

Argos spring musical is this weekend

The Argos High School choral department will be presenting "Fiddler on the Roof" this Friday and Saturday, April 13, 14 at 7:30 p.m. in the Argos High School auditorium. All seats are $5 and available at the door or at the high school office prior to the performance.

• The Arts Council of Marshall County April meeting is at 10 a.m. at Heartland Artists, 103 W. LaPorte St., Plymouth. All interested parties are invited to attend and help plan the council's show at the Yellow River Festival.

Planning to vote absentee? Here's what you need to know

PLYMOUTH — Residents may now vote by absentee ballot if they are a registered voter of the precinct where they reside.
Absentee voting began Monday, April 9, in the Marshall County Clerk’s Office, 211 W. Madison St., Plymouth, from 8 to 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 to 4 p.m. for the upcoming primary election May 8. The office will also be open Saturday, April 28 and Saturday, May 5 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
